Job Interviews. (Am I COMPLETELY out of touch?)

So I am hiring a new receptionist. This is in an established medical office in a very upscale community. I have interviewed about 20 young women looking for work. I was lucky to find one young lady who might be employable.

We had people show up for interviews wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Sorry, that won't fly in this office. About half the interviewees were morbidly obese. A receptionist is the most visible representative of my practice in the whole office. If you can't wedge your ass in a standard office chair, I won't hire you.

One girl showed up with loads of facial piercings. Lips, eyebrows, tongue, cheek. She looked like she fell in a tackle box. Sorry. Not hiring her.

My last interview was with a young woman wearing a low cut blouse with a push-up bra. It wasn't her boobs I found distracting, it was the huge goth script tattoo across her chest. Are you kidding me? This is a doctors office, not Starbucks!

How did we get here?

I have, much like you, a standard for the two receptionists that are the first impression everyone who walks into my complex takes away.

What saves me is that there are a lot of young wives of enlisted men seeking work at the Naval Air Station I'm based and, god bless their mostly Midwestern outlook, they are great.

I wish you luck.

Send a few my way. I'm tired of this freak show.

I work with the public and I consider myself a pretty liberal guy when it comes to a person's personal expression... but yeah... I see a lot of strange stuff and wonder, WTF are these people thinking?

"Too many freaks and not enough circuses!"

Moses, how are you advertising for the position?

It's not just the young ladies!

I do IT support for one of the larger banks on the east coast. Today I was doing some repair work on one of the servers in one our branches located inside a Wal-Mart.

One of the male tellers (Early 20's) actually came to work wearing a pair of dress trousers that had the hems ripped out of the hems of both legs. A black pair of dress shoes with white ankle socks and a shirt that was easily 3 sizes too small that looked as though he had slept in it...outside, in a rain storm.

I was there when he arrived and was on-site for over an hour. He had quite a casual conversation going on with the manager who failed to say anything to him about his appearance.

Here is what a receptionist should look like. Do not settle for any less than that. I can provide more samples if necessary..

Local paper, internet and local business schools.

If anyone looking REMOTELY like that shows up, she's hired. Typing, phone skills are over rated anyway.

We've had the same experience.

Best luck we've had is to advertise at a university and split the full time position into 2 part time positions.

I'd also recommend conducting the first interview over the phone - or at least setting up the interview yourself over the phone. This is particularly important for a receptionist position. We've had some smart and generally good workers who sound just awful on the phone. Cadence is critical in the conversation and it's easier to separate the wheat from the chaff over the phone very quickly. I suppose you can delegate that, but it's a vibe I'd rather feel for myself.

You should see the chuckleheads we get in the labs. Bright kids but they dress like skates, goths and what have you. I've even received handwritten resumes, handwritten!

any men show up for the gig?

i say you hire someone like that dingy hot chick on that TV show "becker". that would be a good time.

scottmandue 02-22-2008 04:39 PM

Have you considered using a temp agency? They may filter out some of the weirdos for you and if you like the person you could hire them after a test run.

Just an idea.

On the flipside, I interviewed for a senior position in a $16B company last year and showed up in a blue suit (duh...). They commented about the suit, as if they were surprised I was wearing one.

Strange.

Where is your office/practice?

I know a guy who might know a guy who might be a receptionist:cool:

Job Interviews. (Am I COMPLETELY out of touch?) If you are then so are almost everyone on this forum. It is posts like this that make me feel old and appreciate growing up in the 60s. Times have changed and most things have not changed for the better.

It's easier to express your 'individuality' with body mods and extreme dress.

Using your words and thinking and stuff is just too hard sometimes, man.

No sense of urgency, no sense of responsibility, no sense of work ethic. Hell I could have cut this short....
