Hey,
Sorry, no real write up I know of, and it's be useless for me to write one --I suck at explaining things:-P Really, though, it was just the first thing that came to mind for me. Although... If you happen to live in the dorms, and thus have no electric bill, you could set them up on a LAN, install Linux (simple) and run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu). Basically it's a distributed computing client that uses people volunteer machines to simulate protein folding. It's a good cause...Of course, then you have to keep up with the hardware maintenance of the machines. Might be better just to donate them, like you're doing. This thread sparked an idea for me, although entirely unrelated. If it works out, I owe you a few beers if you ever make it to Kentucky or Chicago. Quote:

1. Dig up SSNs and related data from garbage pile computers
2. Sell data to Russian mafia 3. Use 1/2 proceeds to hire a geek from the CS department and a photog student from the arts department 4. Get geek to set up server farm with some pirated bandwidth 5. Use other 1/2 proceeds and the photog student to take naughty pix of coeds 6. Obtain 2nd round of funding thru blackmail of Doc that hosed you with a truckload of HIPAA violations. About 50% of what the insurance rate hike would cost him ought to do it. 7. Crank up a web site and make phat stax 8. Buy commercial real estate, drop out before senior year, laugh at liberal arts major chumps/graduates taking your order at Chilis. 9. Thank dtw, he takes Paypal |
Tom, I hope this wasn't you!

CRT's are unfortunately worthless. PC's might (I say might) be worth something depending what's in them...
I say you got hosed. I tossed out around 100 CRT's from my company. I tried to give them away for free to employees, but had to pay for recycling for the rest. |
I worked for a huge corp. that replaces all of its computers and monitors on a regular basis. None of the equip. they replace is anywhere near approaching dinosaur status. They will not sell or give away replaced equip. to employees or anyone else - for fear of enviro law suits, I guess.
|
Thankfully I decided to not go the mercury way, and decided to donate it all.
|
Sell the medical information on them and make a bundle - just kidding.
|
And I thought sniffing glue was bad for you.

over here i can still sell off 17 inch crt's at maybe 10-20 euro's a pop
not everybody has the money to pay for new tft's, and they no longer sell CRT's in the shops so good working 17 inch crt's still have a use personally, i wouldn't have bothered, i make more money doing other things but if i were a student, i would have gotten the kit and kaboodle, and it would have been on some add website by now... there's money in it, just not much, and it takes time to deal with buyers who will haggle over price, delivery , and the all time favorite "does it work, can i see it working when i come to pick it up??" |
For all you negative guy's thinking I got a pile of junk...well we did it. With the help of a few friends we got the computers all cleaned up and slightly upgraded a few.
All in all we ended up with 18 fully functional computers, monitors, mice, and keyboards. On campus we got some press from Professors, and were able to score 4 more computers that the school had no need for anymore. Called up the Salvation Army a few days ago. To say the least they were simply astonished that a group of guys got together and did this, and we aren't exactly a bunch of guys that you would see donating even an old bike. It felt great loading it onto the truck. Hopefully our actions will go to an inner city school or a needy family. Just goes to show you that the younger generation can do something good for the community. |
Does this mean that you can post your Spring Break pics now?? And if ya didn't see in one of the other threads, Gogar is expecting them too.
|
Oh yes I saw gogar's expectations. The only problem is that I might have to censor a few photos.
|
Post the censored ones, then PM Gogar and myself the originals...
Good job with the old computer crap. Not something I care to tackle. |
Good job - at least they'll be of some use to someone and you'll make some people happier for your efforts. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade. Very kind and generous use of your time. Way to go!
