Background:
Was at work, older gentelmen comes up to me and asked for some assitance with some packaging boxes. I strike up a conversation with the gentelmen. Ask him what he is moving and the such. Tells me he is a doctor and moving into a new office.

Then out of the blue the dude asked me if I would like some computers. This is what I walked away with for $1 dollar today. Had him write up a Bill of Sale and everything.

Now the important question: What do I do with all this stuff? :confused:

Melt down the gold? Strip them out and sell the guts? Give me idea's guys. I am fairly tech inclined, and have friends and family that have built their own comps.

Why did you take those CRTs? It could end up costing you money to recycle them.

A good way to get rid of all of those CRTs would be to donate them!

The Dr. scored. You can drop off one or two CRT's over a span of time at a recycler. That many? I bet you have to pay $5-10 each to recycle them. At least that's Cali. Maybe in texas you can take them out to the prairie and just shoot holes in them. :p

Target practice has come to my mind also.

I am thinking another more honorable notion would be to donate a lot of it. Tax deductable right?

I wonder of the disks off those computers have been wiped? Otherwise, they probably contain the financial and possibly medical records of thousands of patients...

EXACTLY. I am not dumb enough to be schooled. There has to be atleast an ounce of gold in there. And I am going to get it out. People make lots of money recyling old computers.

There is always a market for something. I have been googling techniques for the smelting process. Hey, what could go wrong? I could have a smelting party! Few beers, a little bit of gold. Tell the chick you will give her some...(yeah right).

1 troy ounce of gold = 947 dollars.

That makes me happy.

I'm not sure if anyone will take the CRTs as a donation, but don't quote me on that.

I had trouble unloading a couple of CRTs a year or so ago, FWIW.

Any enviormental reasons why the CRT's are hard to dispose of? I work at Office Depot. So, if worse comes to worse they will take the CRT's for free to recycle themselves.

If there are no envirmental worries, I will just take them to my friends grass strip and shoot glock 19 9mm, M1, 12 and 20 gauge, and whatever else I will be able to toss at it. I wonder what black cats sound like when they are ignited inside a desktop.

I just don't want to turn my friends place into a superfund.

An oz of gold will cover 100 sq ft. You may be better off panning for gold.
You may find a niche market though, good selling to you.

Don't go shooting them if your concerned about polluting the environment. Lots of nasty stuff in CRTs. You should donate them to a local school or Boy and Girls club.

Depending on the vintage, they may be worth $25-100 as running computers. Put Ubuntu Linux on 'em and be done. If they aren't at least Pentium 2s with 128mb of ram though, either scround parts out of a few to make a couple of good ones, or scrap the lot. May be able to ebay 'em or craigslist 'em for a few bucks each plus shipping. When you scrap 'em, the CPUs usually have pins on the back that are solid gold, and the memory is worth $ on the auction sites. Don't know if you want ot get into getting rid of the PCB stuff to get the gold tracing inside....

You've purchased a truckload of turd for a buck. If you have the time and energy to perform the alchemy necessary to turn it into gold...more power to you. CRT's are not easily or cheaply disposed of. Unless you can find some poor shmuck to give you a buck for the lot of em.

Somehow this is going to work in my favor. Just spend some time in the garage with some buds evaluating the situation.

Peaking inside we were able to find that most have atleast 1 (128 mb) card in them. Now to turning them on. Some have XP, some 98.

I have 23 computers/monitors/keyboards/mice.

Option 1: Take ram out of the 98 computers, put it into the XP slots. Make a couple decent computers. Time needed about 1 night.

Option 2: Take apart everything, and I mean everything. Get at every available peice to be marketed in someway. Be it Ebay, craigslist, or another entiety.

Option 4: Donate to a local family that runs a science school at the local AFB.

Option 5: Bring to grass strip to blow the he11 out of.
