I agree with Zoanas. I have a pinched nerve that bothers me like that. It has only cramped up a couple of times over the past 15 years & not as badly as yours I think. It never has come & gone in a matter of minutes either. When it happens, it lasts for months. I would go to a doctor, ER or somewhere to get somebody who might be able to diagnose what's going on.
Good luck, Byron. |
How you feeling today?
|
This is like in Rio Bravo, or Rio Lobo, the one with Robert Mitchum and James Caan, not the one with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, The Duke had a bullet pressing on his spine, symptoms like yours. Anybody shoot you in the back and leave the bullet it there?
Maybe CVA or MI(stroke, heart attack) Getting pain anywhere, say left arm or jaw, any head aches, ringing in your ears, shortness of breath, family history of cardiovascular problems? If not, pinched nerve is likely, how is your back/neck? Get it checked out asap. DO NOT FUCH AROUND with this problem. |
I can help your lady friend while you recover.

Tobra is right,
there is this affliction known as 'Saturday night palsy' basics..you get drunk/med's and sleep on your arm, this can pinch/or cause intermittent signals to be send/or fail too send. go see the Dr. Rika |
Another thing to worry about is multiple myloma. It's a blood disease/cancer that causes calcium deposits to form on the bone. The typical way to find out about it is for a tumor to build up on a bone near the spinal cord unnoticed until it starts impinging. At that point it can permanently damage the nerve if you don't get it off immediately. Based on your symptoms you can't rule out MM. The time between getting the numbness and permanent injury can be hours. My father in law started feeling numbness and tingling in his legs one night. He didn't want to bother anyone until morning. By that time he couldn't walk. He got diagnosed within 24 hours of first noticing the numbness and tingling. Despite immediate action he was already paralyzed from the waist down. He died of an infection caused by bed sores 31 days later. If he had not been paralyzed and had gotten treatment right then his life expectancy was 10-12 years. Go to the doctor if you haven't already.

We men are just plain bullheaded. I was not feeling well after dinner 2 weeks ago.....it's just a little indegestion.I was out of malox and was going to drive to the store myself,my wife saw me doubled over in the car and drove to me straight to the ER. I coded 5 minutes later in the ER.Had it happened at home I would not be typing this.
We men need to start taking care of ourselves listen to your body and act now not later. Hope you are doing fine. |

WOW, thanks for the wake up call, and glad you are OK! They had a piece on a national CBC radio show a couple months ago, where they were interviewing a comedian (Lorne Elliot, methinks) about his heart attack & recovery. He talked about how he hadn't been feeling well for a couple hours. Brushed it off, went out to the garage to have a smoke. Within half an hour he was in the ER having a heart attack. A few days later, they had another interview... with a guy who had listened to the piece with the comedian. Turns out he had been feeling crappy that morning, so at lunch he went out for a burger. He was listening to the radio, heard the interview with the comedian describing his heart attack... decides he'd better call 911. 10 minutes later he's in the ER having a heart attack. Says that interview saved his life, he would have been too stubborn to go to the ER otherwise. |
Byron, you out there? Last time he posted was 10:15 last night. Anybody hear from him?
Quick - someone post some real RSR parts that you are willing to trade for - maybe even throw in a vintage Pea Picker - |
He is fine, I just called him and he is waiting for a doctor to call back. He was busy unloading a race car so I do not think he is having a heart attack, most likely a pinched nerve.
Byron - Looking forward to having a beer with you one day soon. Jim |
When my wife answered the phone one time at the ER, this guy was asking about his chest pain, should he come in, etc. She tells him it is consistent with an MI, he needs to hang up and dial 911. He tells her he is playing golf a few blocks from the hospital and will come in when he is done. They wheeled him in golf spikes first, flat on his back and blue from the nipple line up, already heading for ambient temperature.
I had a guy who usually came in with his daughter and missed an appointment. His wife tells me Tony has not been feeling well, his arm was swollen and hurting. Fortunately, they listened to me, went and got him, took him to see my friend Connie the Thoracic Surgeon, and he got to keep the arm. Turned out his rib was impinging on a vein, and if he would have waited a bit longer he would have had it off at the shoulder., Cut out a little piece of rib and it was all good. Byron, hello, anyone, Byron |
While many of the above mentioned things are POSSIBLE, most of them are unlikely. Yes you COULD have multiple myeloma, but your chances are small. You should get seen by a doctor, honestly my first thought is trigger thumb. You get an inflammatory nodule in the tendon to the digit, it gets locked in the flexed position (often quite painful) and must be manually straightened. Pretty common. Therapy is either injection of steroids locally to try and shrink the nodule vs a surgical release for refractory cases.
The numbness isn't typical, ulnar nerve entrapment causes numbness in the 4th and 5th digits only, the radial nerve runs the rest of the hand so getting numbness just in the thumb would have to be a nerve impingement fairly low in the arm...possible I guess but again unlikely. Let me know what it turns out to be, I'm curious. |
Thanks for the concern guys, I called my doc 1st thing, sat on hold for ever, ended up leaving a message, still haven't heard back from them:mad:
Arm still sore, but hasn't locked up again, but still feels weaker than normal:( I'll call the doc back in the morning. I have one day left to move the rest of my cars & stuff from the ex's, so unless the doc tells me, I have to keep going. Got to sign back off as I have a work commitment that I'm late to and couldn't get out of. |
the weak thing is akin to a loose cable on your battery, don't get all the juice that is there
anybody in the area maybe can help a brutha out relocating his rollin' stock? too far for me. |
Just to clarify, is your ARM weak or your THUMB weak? If it is arm weakness that is much more concerning for a central lesion than thumb weakness. From your original post it sounded like this was isolated to your thumb.
|
Arm (yes, while only the thumb froze, the whole arm was much weaker) is feeling much better, thanks. It may have just been stress, but I'm still goig to see the doc just to be sure.
Again, thanks for the concern & calls. |
Wait. Your symptoms showed up SIX DAYS AGO, and you haven't been seen yet?
GO TO THE DOCTOR, YOU STUBBORN MULE!!!!! |
