Left Hand Has Gone Numb???????????

Kind of caught me off guard, taking the trash out and all the sudden, my left thumb, just locked up, curved up next to my index finger and I couldn't move it, it just started tingling:eek:
I had to use my right hand to pull my thumb from the funny angle and only then could I move it. This has been over an hour ago,and my hand is still slightly numb & tingling. For the record, I'm right handed, but did notice while driving yesterday that my left hand was not feeling normal. Any one else had something like this happen??

can you stick your tongue out?

mack6820 02-27-2008 04:34 PM

sounds like you have a calcium dificiency. Kinda like a charly horse. Take a roll of tums. They are very high in calcium.
Im a aircraft mechanic and my hands lock up alot from arthritis.

If you can't stick out your tongue, get someone to drive you to the hospital ASAP.

If its a cramp, deficiency thing; bananas are good for cramps too.

Switch to the right hand. :p

Hopefully a real doctor will chime in.

I'm not a doctor but I stayed at a Motel 6 last night. It could be a lot of things. Biggest concern with left handed numbness is a stroke. Is there anyone around who can check your eyes and face and ballance? How does your head feel?

If it's not a stroke next on the list is probably nerve impingment. It could be in your neck, elbow, maybe even shoulder. Something presses on the nerve somewhere above the thumb but the pain is referred to the thumb. Same thing happens when you have a herniation in the low back but you feel shooting pain in a leg.

Either way you need to get a check up by a neurologist right away. If you start feeling strange or it starts to get worse call 911 immediately or have someone bring you to the ER immediately. Take an asprin on the way. If it doesn't seem like a stroke it's probably some nerve root impingement in the neck or elbow. It needs checking into either way.

Byron - didn't you have some surgery a while ago? Any chance it's related - maybe hit a nerve os something?

FWIW.

Best,

Kurt

I can stick out my tongue. I had already planned on calling the doctor in the morning, have been eating bananas this week.

I was using my right hand at the time, when I lifted my left, is when it happened:(

Lift your hands over your head. Can you do it? yes. Good.

Smile in a mirror, can you do it? Good.

Your typing on the internet so you cannot be too bad off.

Potassium is your friend, hows your diet? Do you take a multi Vitamin every day?

How much water do you drink every day? You should be drinking at LEAST a gallon a day.

your probably dehydrated (its cool out so your probably not drinking enough) and you have a potassium deficiency.

Hang in there bud I plan on bringing up those Oil Cooler lines soon and you need to buy me a beer. :D

Pinched nerve is my guess. I'm curious to hear what the doc's have to say. A few years ago I woke up with drop foot, and half of my right foot was numb. It took a few weeks for the foot to start working right and the feeling to return, but it eventually did. More recently half of my right hand became numb, still is. It's been almost two weeks now.

Perfect opportunity for "strangers".

C'mon you guys were all thinking it. Don't look at me like that.

It may be something you did to your spine lifting the trash. That is not classic men's work, by the way.

Yes,
Yes,
Yes,
I drink a lot of water, always have a bottle near by & a few in the car, so that shouldn't be it.

Good news on the lines as I just haven't had a chance to head out of town and this is not good timing to have this happen.

I type with my right hand, I'm a hunt & peck type a guy.

Yes, but this isn't related to that one, but that was on a nerve, but all better now:D

And to make things worse, a cute little friend just called to tell me she has a nice fire in the fire place and wanted me to bring a bottle of wine and such, if she lifed closer, I would be on the way, but my hand has gone numb 2 more times since I posted this so I think I'll take a few advil & call it a night.

I had to explain to my wife why I was laughing so hard.

Then I had to explain what "strangers" is...

And here is a pic that I can share of who is offering me a rub downhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204168163.jpg
but I don't want to drive that far, and since she has had a few drinks, I don't want her driving either.

My left hand goes numb regularly... it's from an injury I got working on an old VW westfalia: fell backwards and slammed my elbow into the corner of a peice of sheetmetal. Hurt so bad I puked, and I couldn't feel two of my fingers for almost a week.

Did you whack anything recently, or engage in any repetitive motions? If I paint or sand with my left arm, the hand will sometimes go tingly.

To this day, if I hold my arm a certain way I can get it to go numb.

I don't like the sound of that. If the numbness is recurring, you shuld have it looked at without delay. Calling it a night isn't a good idea. Go see a doctor.

Groesbeck Hurricane 02-27-2008 06:49 PM

tums contain calcium, calcium is good for you, calcium requires an acidic environment to absorb, calcium from oyster shells is about 10 to 15% absorbable in the body, tums neutralizes acidity in the stomach and contains calcium from oyster shells. You will receive VERY little absorbable calcium from tums but it will upset your digestive tract to constantly neutralize the acid and have to make more...

That said, go see a doctor. Can you curl your tongue, smile, all the above stated things? Never hurts to go in and get checked out immediately!! Could hurt to wait if you do that.

Heck, could be nothing but you never know. Mine was a pinched nerve caused by a torn rotator cuff. Strange stuff that!
