Father and Daughter times together

Dad just sent this to me...

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs; in other words, redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day, she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich, and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professor had to be the truth, and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends either because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened, and then asked, 'How is your friend Audrey doing?' She replied, 'Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over.'

Her father asked her, 'Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend Audrey, who only has a 2.0? That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA, and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.'

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, 'That's a crazy idea! How would that be fair? I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work. And she's done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!'

The father slowly smiled and said gently, 'Welcome to the Republican Party.'

I think you're missing the point, and the joke. Might want to re-read it

I thought it was saying that republicans don't go to parties or have lots of friends! Not very nice, there seem to be some pretty cool republicans here!

I think you completely and totally missed the point of the story.

The point was that expecting to keep what you work hard for makes you a Republican.

The fact that both the girls in the story will end up with the same exact degree at the end of it all is a commentary on our system too. Unintended I suppose, but somewhat appropriate.

For out-of-college hires, my employer has a minimum GPA of 3.50. If HR recieved applications from both of those girls, one would end up in the circular file.

Not perfect, I know, but it does address your concerns to some degree.

C'mon, women don't go to college to get a GPA, they go to get a husband.

From the sounds of it, Ms. 2.0 is doing a much better job than Ms. 4.0!

Nice pun.

That's nice to hear of actually. Grades should count for something. Not everything (then it just becomes all about test scores, which is a problem too), but at least count for something. . .

I get VERY annoyed at seeing schools pumping out graduates today with the same degree I hold who can't write, can't spell, can't compose a coherent paragraph, can't perform basic math without a calculator and can't COMMUNICATE in a professional setting. It de-values MY degree and I know for a fact I busted my ass for mine (and paid a lot for the privilege!)

College is becoming something of a joke. A degree now is largely (most fields) just getting one's ticket punched so one doesn't have to work a job wearing a name tag or "pieces of flair". It's kind of what a H.S. Diploma used to be 40 years ago - a demonstration that one can perform at the minimum level necessary to perform tasks other than manual labor.

Why do we even celebrate H.S. graduation anymore anyhow? I mean, I guess it's something to strive for as a milestone goal, but for most people out there, does it REALLY represent the end of their educational training? Doubt it. Lots of folks go on to college, others to trade school, others to the military. . . there's always more training. I guess maybe it's just a celebration of. . . being given options for further education (?) Never thought about it. . .

Nope, just off on another PPOT tangent.

We're all about tangential velocity around here.

I agree. The question here? Which girl has the cutest pooper and the biggest boobs? The true measure of success...

The point is, some people work hard for the 4.0, some work hard for the 2.0. Some people coast by and have the 4.0 some people coast by and have a 2.0. Ultimately, everyone should keep what they earn and nothing should be redistributed.

You know Lube, I thought about that, but then decided that adding "joke" or something to the title would give it away too early.

OT is all about "tangential velocity" so feel free to thread-jack this if you like:-d
