Would you move from New Jersey to Nevada?

My job at Rutgers is not secure at all, and I may have the opportunity to go back in industry with a little more money, and a little more job security (three years at least) in Reno, Nevada.

Regardless of the job (which would be very similar to what I am already doing), I am more concerned about the change of landscape. I enjoy the green in NJ, but not too much the overcrowding. Nevada seems like rocks and mountains, no water, no forrests...What are the pros? I have never been there, but I was in Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. Is it the same? Tabs, anyone who know the area, and who knows NJ, would you do the move? I might be able to get a bigger land for less money too, but then I would never be able to move back to NJ...

Aurel

It is a big country out there and it's good to experience all kinds of places.. New Jersey is not going anywhere. It will be there when you are ready or not ready to come back..

Taking the question at face value, I'd move to Reno (I lived in Philly for a short bit)

Think Lake Tahoe when you think Reno, mountains, forests and the like , not the same as Phoenix or Tuscon.
Though I've only spent a few hours in Reno.

Think of Reno as a hilly Trenton.

Jersey? What exit?

What do you value most that keeps you in NJ?

We bought 11.38 acres about 7 miles out of Virginia City( just in the mountians above Reno) and are going to drill a well next month..$$$$ then need to build the house after that. We are at 6000' and have wild horses roaming through the area Personally I think it's a slice of heaven I would recomend it for sure

The fact that it is the closest to my home country (France), the ocean, the freshwater fishing, the proximity to NYC, the european influence...

I do business with a firm in Reno, Sierra Nevada Corp....most of their employees live north, in Susanville or west in the foothills.

I like Reno, not all of it, but I like it. There is a lot of faulty perceptions about Nevada. One of the most scenic roads on the planet leaves from Reno, Route 50 across Nevada into Utah, an absolute juggernaut of high passes and 50 miles views. Nevada is not all desert

To the west, Lake Tahoe, to the South, Yosemite.

Do it...I would.

Reno is in a nice area (Tahoe/Reno) with tons of hiking, fishing, skiing, open space, etc. Mountains, forests, rivers, high desert, lots of variety. Nice crisp weather, no NJ-style humidity. I don't know much about the "city" of Reno itself. I'd move there from NJ.

I grew up in NJ, don't really like it except for southern NJ.

Why don't you take a few days and explore the area? Nice vacation if nothing else.

I would certainly not live in Reno if I moved. Say thirty miles outside Reno would be fine, if commute times are not too horrendous.

Not a lot of that in Reno.

Minden/Gardnerville are beautiful. Anywhere between Reno and the lake.

Funny that you feel drawn to the east coast's "European influence". When I lived in Europe, the last thing I was looking for was "American influence."

People in Reno are great. Nice people friendly, but they will leave you alone.

Your 30 mile commute will most likely take 25 minutes.

The biggest thing is you can get away from people out here. There are places where you can drive out of Reno for a hour, and its just you. No people for as far as you can see. I never could pull that off when I have spent time back east.

Reno - The town itself is getting kinda run-down and shabby. The general area is great. Some of the better, newer neighborhoods are south of town off the Mt. Rose Highway. It's a little higher and cooler there; and Lake Tahoe is just over the hill.

A good friend sells real estate in Reno, so PM if you need his assistance.

I would move to Reno from most places on the East coast.

There is a Ferrari Hillclimb road outside Reno that is pretty stellar. The Mount Rose Hwy between Reno and Lake Tahoe has one of the most astounding scenic views on the planet.

You want cosmopolitan, San Francisco is less than 4 hours from Reno

I'd move to Reno from NJ in a minute. I've been all around Reno many times, and all over NJ and France. While NJ can remind you of northern France, the Reno area can look like parts of southeast France, such as Haute Provence and the Alps. There are two places where I've ridden my bike through a broad alpine valley of fragrant sage. The hills above Reno, and Haute Provence.
