Why do some people hate Apple/Mac?
I just don't get the ire. It's really a superior machine compared to the Windows variants. Easier to use, less intrusive, less viruses. A better "appliance" if you will that can enhance one's lifestyle. Maybe that's Pollyanna, but after at least four Windows machines, I'm glad to have gone back to Mac. Once our new server system is set up at work, I'll request another Mac. Yes, XP is good, but I think I've reached my limit with Microsoft as Vista seems more trouble than it's worth. Anyway, I'm just saying...

People hate a lot of things for irrational reasons.
That being said, I have a healthy respect for Macs, but I do dislike the attitudes of *some* Mac users who seem to think they are holier than thou, simply because they endorse a certain product. But I can also say the same things about *some* Porsche, BMW, etc., drivers, even though I am included in that group.

I agree, though I haven't noticed as much holier than thou attitude from Mac users as often as the same from Windows users. Mac users, conversely, seem to think Windows users are simply out of touch.

First "God", then "religion", now Apple.
![]() This should be fun. Apple is the only brand that I am aware of that attracts so many zealots willing to devote so much time and emotion to a product they don't even use. ![]() It also brings out the "troll" in many otherwise reasonable PPOT members. ![]() Best, Kurt |

Everytime I set out to buy a new computer I think about Mac. Then I go to the apple store, pick out a cool rig, look at the price and go online and buy more PC crap.
I do have an ipod if that counts.

My feeling is that a Mac is something an owner develops a relationship with and cares for. A Windows-based PC is a %*%*&&^ing thing that you are forced to work with (or around) to accomplish your work goals. It becomes obvious why the Mac owner is more passionate about their ownership experience.

Apple is a fine product. It excels a a small number of tasks. They have their strong points & weak points just like anything else. I just get tired of the folks who want to tell me that a Mac can run faster, jump higher, dive deeper & come up drier.

I don't hate Macs. In another post I outlined my recent less than stellar experience with trying to get a MacBook Pro to work properly with Apple's own peripherals.
The MBP was/is a beautiful piece, and had anyone at Apple Care been able to make it work properly, I would have gladly kept it. Perhaps if I'd taken it to dinner first, our relationship would have developed. What I do find tiresome is the assertion of opinion (" really a superior machine", "easier", "better"...) as a fact that only the clearly unenlightened cannot see. A product that works "enhances one's lifestyle", if that's the goal. I couldn't get the MBP to do either. It sure was pretty, though. Tim |

When we looked at Mac, we were told we couldn't transfer files, that I had to pay extra for word processing. We stuck with windows.

My only thing about Macs is that the hardware is expensive... I can't justify 700 for a micro desktop that is 1/2 the performance that I can get by building a machine for not much more than half of that.
So I split the difference and run Linux on commodity hardware.

I've always stated that machines is machines, YMMV. At least the folks who are enjoying their Macs have a REASON to be fanboys - you anti-Mac zealots are just whining about nothing. ![]() Best, Kurt |

pwd72s - you can certainly xfer files, just copy to disk or via network. Sure, you won't get some settings, etc. but your data files should migrate - unless you are locked into MS stuff. For wordprocessing, check out NeoOffice - it is a Mac version of OpenOffice that doesn't require a few hoops to jump thru to make it work (regular OO.o needs X11 installed on a Mac)

SUN hardware and Solaris is clearly superior to Mac hardware and software. Why aren't you using it?
The big plus on Windows, for me, is the wide spread proliferation of any sort of software I need, and, the biggest plus: Visual Studio. There is not a development platform from Apple than can touch it. Xcode? Yea, right, give me a break. I've been using computers for 17 years now, and am still now as completely baffled by the Mac OS interface as I was in grade school. It is NOT intuitive, or easy to use, or any of that. Windows I find to be intuitive. CDE, JDS, AfterStep, I find intuitive.

Above that, Macs compete very favorably on price with the other major brands. I would guess folks that build there own computers are not really in the Mac market. Best, Kurt |

You should just buy a Mac. Oh, and while at it, take off the epaulets and make some black friends. You could probably do both at the Apple Store. ![]()

A while back one of my business partners wanted to get a new computer for his daughter who is a budding video editor, movie director.
Convinced him to get a Mac. He was waiting for me to come over and set it up. I told him just plug it in and turn it on. He calls me in a panic, he went to add a printer and found that it was already installed and that it had found the other printers and computers on his home network. I asked him why that was a bad thing. He paused and replied, it's not, I was just not expecting it. He eventually bought one for himself. He needed to do some quick edits on some footage and called me for help, I can't find this feature/function. I told him to look at the menus, think logically about what he wanted to do and then go to where HE would put the feature. He found it first try. That was the AHAH moment for him.
