I was watching Dr. Phil (while burning CD's) and he talked about the Megan's Law site for California Sex Offenders. I think every state and Canada should have this, but I was flabbergasted when I saw how many there were.

I don't know if it's better to know or not, but with children I want to know if my neighbour is bent.

This is really disturbing to me, and I think there needs to be more "permanent" ways to deal with these people!

I did a quick search on L.A. and the blue dots represent KNOWN offenders......

This thing is getting out of control. There was (another) news report on this morning about a legal battle between a released sex offender wanting to move into an upscale neighborhood around here close to a school. Obviously the community is up in arms about it and the guy's attorney is pitching a fit because "he's paid his debt to society, blah blah blah".

Far as I'm concerned part of your sentence for a sex crime (rape, incest, pedophilia, etc.) SHOULD be having to carry that baggage around with you. If it makes it harder to find jobs/places to live, fine. I could care less. Serves you right. Where the hell do these people get the notion that their "debt to society" stops at the prison gate once they've served their prison time anyway? Seems to me we have an opportunity to effectively make sentences more severe without costing the state any extra money. What's the problem here?

If you want to be thoroughly disgusted, pull up the Meghan's Law report for the area in which you live. I've done it - downright scary/disturbing/disgusting.

Then think, how many times do you think these people committed crimes before: (1) they were finally caught, (2) they were successfully prosecuted and didn't "plea out", and (3) actually got a conviction?

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say it's probably on the order of 10%-20% of the people ever actually end up getting busted/convicted/put into the Meghan's Law database.

When I was living in So. Cal. the local detectives and other law enforcement about 20 total, were letting everyone in the neighborhood know that a sexual offender was being released and going to live in our neighborhood. It was a big whole day production with the large motor home and all. I guess the motor home was for the detectives to take breaks. The detectives came to my door and gave me a colored picture of this guy. 5 minutes later this low life is on the local TV news for indecent exposure and already arrested down the street. I look down the hill and see the detective's getting in their cars and motor home and leaving. This guy last only a few hours before committing another sexual crime. Unbelievable.

I remember when I was about 12-13 there was a rape in the city (big news then) and my Dad shocked me by saying "they should take that rapist, nail his bag to a picnic table, give him a rusty tin can lid, and set the table on fire" - My Dad was always very mellow and calm. I'll never forget those words

In VA near where I work they have a sexual predator unit.

After someone serves their sentence for a violent sex crime they have some sort of review.
If they are not cured then they get locked up there, until they are.

A sexual predator on kids will allways be a predator, this is why Megans Law came about.
Once the state justice is through with them and they are released, they need to be tracked as they will never really be cured.

They should just find an Island somewhere and deport the bastards there.

I have one that lives to close to me for my comfort, I mad-dog him every time I see him.

I've heard that they cannot be cured.

There was a story in the local liberal rag talking about how they are homeless because the restrictions of the law are too narrow.

Problem with that Meagans Law list is it is outdated, frightening number of the offenders don't stay current on there home and work info. They are on the list, but they don't live at the place on the list anymore, or never did.

These guys have something bent in their brains, can't get right and won't. The victim deals with it every day for the rest of their lives, why not the perpetrator?

I seem to remember that taking a male dog in for uh, what do they call it "neutering" seem to have a very calming effect.

there's such a thing called chemical neutering in use in some Euro countries
Holland for instance uses it as a requirement before some get released again
they use androcur

it's not 100% successfull, it does good things with the hormone balance, blocks Testosteron receptors and that way it takes the edge off,
but it does not make the thoughts go away completely...
