Anybody we know?

A word of warning. This vid has a soundtrack with lyrics that some people may find offensive. If you are easily offended then I would suggest you turn your volumn down now. The music doesn't add anything to the vid anyways.

Dude is lucky. Notice lack of POPO presence. Guess they did not want to explain it.

I would have gone ballistic if a tow truck driver would have treated any car of mine in that careless of a fashion.

Was kinda shoddy but at that point I don't think it mattered much anymore.

It would have to me. No doubt he totally effed up both rear quarters and probably did additional damage to the front valence area. Had it been me after just experiencing damaging my car, I truly might have went beserk on that tow truck bastage.

Maybe the kids were more concerned about clearing the scene quickly before the heat showed up?

edit: I also think the tow truck guy has an obligation to not do anything until law enforcement shows up - maybe he agreed to overlook this and just jerk the car out of the ditch w/o the kid gloves?

Best,

Kurt

I suppose it could have very easily been "Do whatever you have to do to get it out as fast as possible, I'm not worried about the car I'm worried about the police"

my guess:
low & stiff suspension, he came out of the turn on the power, the hump surprised him, weight balance upset, driver freaked out when car went a bit wobbly, slammed breaks, rest is history

In CA., you could not get the police to respond to this if you wanted them. Single car accident w/ no injuries or property damage, (other than the car)? WTF would any LE agency care about it? He was speeding? Driving recklessly? Prove it. Sorry, there's no crime to investigate and no traffic accident that needs police. Same as if you were reaching for cigarettes or a CD and went in the ditch. BFD.

As for the tow truck driver, he was a real POS. He did everything possible to damage the car, as if he was trying. Why drive on the pavement several yards with the car strung-up like a turkey? Why attach to the car that way? Weird. he very possibly did a lot more damage than the off-road excursion. I did not see any significant damage from the original crash. May have been some, but still the tow should not intentionally damage the car like that. It never would have happened with me or anyone who knew anything about towing around, but these were little kids.

I've gotten into it with tow truck drivers before, some are great and some are idiots. This was an idiot.

Denis:

I was a passenger in a single car accident, like you described, near Aspen many many years ago. The only damage was to the car and there was no property damage or personal injury other than the car.

Both me and the driver had been drinking and all that we cared about was getting the car towed before LEOs showed up. The tow truck driver said he could not do anything until the police showed up. I don't know if that's the law in CO or not or how it applies to CA or other states, only my personal experience.

If you watch the video, you will see one of the kids looking up and down the road and scratching his neck (see 1:52) and it seems to me he is concerned about the police showing up. Whether his concern is valid is of course open for debate.

Best,

Kurt

OK, since everybody apparently knows better (just asking), how do you propose to pull the car out of a pretty deep ditch which is not wide. Furthermore, the car ends up with the nose up (over rocks)/rear down in the ditch opposite to where the tow truck can drive. The rear of the car has to be pulled up higher than the front to even dislodge the front from the boulders where it is resting..... Rear towhooks may not be accessible and even then, I'm not sure about safety of pulling a car 70 degrees up from horizontal with the J hooks if they could fit in....

I can 100% gaurantee I would have done a much better job of extracting that car if I wanted to.

The other guys are probably right however about the kids just wanting that car out of there in a big hurry. In todays society, you have to: Worry about getting sued by the property owner for rutting his property. Worry about the environuts calling the EPA to clean up a quart of oil. Worry about PETA being concerned that a field mouse might lick some spilled anti-freeze. Worry about the cops making a federal crime over it.

I would think that the way the car came out of the ditch may have been fine, its when the tow driver dragged the car on its nose across the road that seems a little unnecessary.

Using a recovery strap would be the first thing to do diff. It will not screw up sheet metal. 2 straps would be the next thing. Lift the front and rear togther. That truck would have had no problem at all. Bring it up and drive out to the road.

In PA if the car has to be towed from the scene it must be reported. Most the cops from busier dept will say if you can recover it and the person could drive then they wont be called. I have been out and called and told them what was going on and said you really dont need to send anyone.
