Question I have some extra Pentax lenses, does anyone need them?

I know they are worth about $79.00 total and the local shops are not interested in them. I hate the thought of throwing away good lenses. If anyone is interested, let me know. At the very least they will work well with any Pentax 35mm SLR:

bought new in 1992, good lenses, no scratches, no dings, about 99% of new. The lenses have no issues.

SMC Pentax-A 1:2 50mm 3948032 PK-A/R

Vivitar 70-210mm 1:4.5-5.6 MC Macro Focusing Zoon 52mm PK-A/R

Both lenses work with auto f-stop, both will fit the new Pentax digitals but will NOT be auto focus.

P30 body, something going wrong with the shutter, stopped advancing, only good for parts. Some wear marks on the case, no dents, no dings, used to take nice photos but not worth anything unless you repair cameras.

Wife decided we should by a new Nikon (yes, I wanted the new camera) to replace our two 35mm as we have five different Nikkor lens. Pentax has to go somehow...

We are currently near Cincinnati.

D300 was a little bit steep for the budget. D80X was within reach. The D40 and D60 did not appear to be as accepting of the older lenses. I was looking at one auto focus 70-300MM zoom by Tamron. I've seen that name batted around a bit.

I started for the Pentax K200D but The Wife opted for the camera we would have more lenses for. The Nikkors are all a bit older than the Pentax lenses, but we have an interesting variety: 300M, a couple 70-150mm, 35-70mm, 28mm wide angle, doubler, and some filters. Keeping all the Nikkors (oh, newer 70-150 and wide angle are Vivitar).

I got rid of all of my Pentax stuff this last summer.

I will take a digital Cannon body though...

There was a time in my life when dreamed of a Pentax f 1.2 50 normal lense and a 70-210 macro zoom. I bet those cost plenty when you bought them new. Those lenses are a marvel of modern physics. I don't think I've ever personally used a lense that low. If you can't get rid of them anywhere else I'll take them. I can probably still put my hands on a K1000. I grew up with an old Spotomatic with a 50 mm f2 lense. Still an icon.

D80 is what you need to run all the autofocus lenses. D40/60 requires the focus motor be in the lens. Online they're $700 now, which is a bargain. The D200 is almost down to $1,200, if you need a metal frame or weather-sealing.

Thanks Guys!! Looks like they are going to a good home!!

Now to "convince" The Wife we really do need an auto focusing zoom lens that is out of the budget...

What's the zoom range and budget you're looking for?

I still have (and use) my Pentax k1000. Great camera.

Honestly I think digital has cheapened the art of photography and made it less interesting as a whole.

Digital cameras are great for situations where you just want to take a million snapshots of something like for documentation purposes though. In the old days, you had to be really judicious about what you photoed - cost of film & developing, etc. Not now.

Steve,

I'm dreaming of something that goes out to 500 MM for less than $100!! Yep, dreaming!! Time to start saving for something that goes out that far. My old (as in six digit serial number) Nikkor 300MM is 4.5 but does give good photos on film. I always liked faster shutter speeds but the $1200 mark is steeper than I want to go.

Is Tamron any good? Guess Vivitar went the way of the dodo bird...

Jeff,

Yep, also keeping the 35mm film camera. It is an old Nikon FM2 that really could use a good cleaning.

Time to polish up the old lenses, my new camera is to arrive at the end of the week!!

I know the Pentax lenses will do great!! They really are something special, great optics. I always had better results than my skills should allow.

Compared to a 35mm film camera, the Nikon DSLRs have a crop factor of 1.5, so a 300mm lens has the same field of view as a 450mm lens on a film camera. If that works, the Nikon 70-300VR lens is very sharp and a bargain at around $430. Tamron and Tokina are excellent after market lens makers, but you can't really beat that Nikkor for the money.
