I don't know what happened to the words in my original post? Any way I'm looking for 1-2 acres of land along the northern part of Florida to buy as potential retirement property. I don't need to be near the water but near things like Home Depot, shopping, hospitals is required. So for you northern Florida guys what's out there ? I'd like to stay away from home owners associations if possible. City water and sewer along with paved roads would be nice. Just starting my search and in no hurry. Thanks in advance.

Try Okaloosa and Walton counties. I've spent some time up there.

I agree with the Okaloosa county idea. I have an uncle who retired to Fort Walton Beach and we visit frequently. If you buy in the right area you have city sewer and water but are technically in an unincorporated area so your property taxes are a fraction of being in the city limits. The largest air base in the world is located there so you see lots of neatly dressed people with short hair walking around.
Look into the western panhandle near Pensacola and Alabama. Far enough away from the major cities to be reasonably priced but less than an hour from good airport connections. Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach are a little more than an hour away from each other and both have excellent airports. There's lots of nothing in between.

Look in Gilchrist county. Low taxes, (poor schools but that probably isn't an issue) and you are 40 minutes from the west coast and right out side of Gainesville - so UF, Shands, a VA center (one in Lake City as well), 2 other hospitals, the Mall, Gator football, etc. as well as the beauty of N. Florida. You may also look at Alachua county - higher taxes, but not quite as country.
If you want a real-estate agent in the area, let me know and I can put you in touch with a friend of mine.

This is on the west coast but really nice real estate. Cape Coral.
Cape Coral is a suburb of Naples. Naples is so expensive and Cape Coral is a bargain. Get a lot with: on a canal to dock your boat, canal with ocean access to go fishing and boating, close to everything, etc.... How do I know, I have owned a property there since 1991. I have not developed it, but it was a good investment... Here is a few links: http://www.capecoral.net/

Time out for lesson in Florida geography. Cape Coral is more of a suburb of Ft. Myers than Naples as it is just over the bridge. Naples is about 45 minutes south of Cape Coral.
