Web creation/publishing software
Its been years since I've created and published a site, and used FrontPage at the time with OK results (my host was always a pain about this.)
I'm prepping to publish a new, basic private site with a bunch of pics and video. I'mnow using Bluehost.com. I cant find my FrontPage disc and in any case its 5 years old now so I suspect there must be better software for a consumer. I spent 2 hours searching Microsoft, Wiki, ZDNet and CNet for recommendations and found very out-of-date (CNet's latest was 2001?) or overweight applications (Macromedia, $2700?). Microsoft Expression's Download page is a dead link. What's a decent, modern, consumer package for basic site creation and maintenance? Thanks

I prefer to do stuff by hand but rely heavily on Dreamweaver.
It's $399 US and if you can swing an educational discount even better. To simplify things I'd go find a CMS (content management system) like WordPress that you are comfortable with and just customize it. Makes adding content like photos and video much easier.

I just checked out Bluehost.
Nice ISP, good feature set. Even includes Ruby. Your hosting account should include an online WYSIWYG html editor. Looks like it should be ample for basic sites.

Go there and get their software (cms type of software), get a template ... and be happy. Dreamweaver is sweet for table layout (not sure about newer versions and how it handles CSS). I too rely on just a simple app like text/notepad. Dreamweaver, web builder, etc ... apps like to fill your html with all kinds of unwanted html code and sometimes just gets a bit hairy. You could look at the old Netscape suit which used to include a web builder capabilites. It's free and does almost the same as those $400 apps. Wordpress is good. Ruby on Rails is good. Zope is also good. But it's based in python ... not a bad language, it's just not as prevalent as php or now ruby. I like modx because it's php and the community is just awesome. If I didn't have such a huge investment of learning in PHP I would go with Ruby ![]()

+1 on Dreamweaver... pretty easy to learn and easy to use in designer mode and it writes the code for you pretty much.

dreamweaver is quite powerful...also consider open source solutions (free!) such as NVU for WYSIWYG editing...
