Dads: what cartoons does your 4-7 year old watch?
We're moving along with The Great Adventures of Joey and Rex book series. Have hit a home run with our author who has created quite a dynamic universe for our characters, but it's been slow going with an illustrator. Saw another today and was very disappointed in their work.
Have seen a lot of graphic styles by now; we need one that will work well with books, animation and toys/branding. Was hoping an illustrator would bring their ideas to life for us, but that's not going to happen at this time. I don't have a TV, so not even sure what's on Saturday mornings these days. What does your 4-7 year old son watch on cartoons?

Phineas and Ferb
Older Scooby Doo Pokemon Pixar flicks We really limit the amount he watches - oh just turned 5 by the way Oh and really wants to watch Speedracer but mom doesn't like the level of violence in it so we will wait a few years. He has seen some Rocky and Bullwinkle and liked it as well. Muppets are also good

I really think you have got to nail down the music. Even so so illustrations can come alive with the right background music and sound effects to capture the mood.
I still love looney tunes and I think the music is 1/2 of it or more. If it's a really scary part just use the PBS background music when they talk about President Bush.

We try to keep him in the Sprout Channel as much as possible. He loves Spongebob though.
Other than that we limit him to about 1-2 hours a day.

Dora Diego Backyardigans Word World Little Einsteins Wow Wow Wubbzy Dragon Tales Clifford also Cars and Disney Princess movies They are not allowed to watch Spongebob or cartoons with too much violence in them. We just let our 5 year old start watching Superman but we watch it with him.

the:
Spongebob just isn't what my wife and I want our kids watching right now. Spongebob tends to land on the somewhat crass and rude side, he often shows little respect for others, etc. Just a choice we have made, not what we want to model to our kids right now. When they are older we probably will let them watch it, but not now.

Thank you Gentlemen, much appreciated. I'll check these shows out online and go to a friend's house this weekend.
Question: a running theme throughout the series is that Joey and his pet T-Rex (Rex) go on great adventures through time and location in their magic biplane. In each story, they will encounter some historical event and help someone through that event, for example one story is about meeting Hugh Locke King and helping him build Brooklands. We know that dads, for the most part (and please correct me if I'm wrong) pretty much want to get through the story and their kids off to sleep at bedtime. But we would like to sprinkle some "links" in the books that will encourage you to go to the website, type in a code, and maybe read something about the first cars that raced at Brooklands, complete with lots of pictures and racing car sounds, etc. Goal is to make it fun, a little educational, and interesting for both boys and dads. BTW, there will be underlying PR campaign in '09 with a "get boys to read" message (boys don't read) designed to get dads to take an active roll in encouraging them to read. By making it fun, interactive and interesting, we hope to make a dent. Thoughts on the book-to-web conversion idea? yes, it is possible we are expecting too much.
