Not surprised to see Nissan on the worst list in multiple places, on my side wrenching business I'm getting more and more work from them. Not sure what happened to them over the past years but the quality I see is low at best.

I had a Jeep Cherokee that had I purchased used, and it wasn't as reliable as I had hoped for.

Interesting to note that only Nissan trucks are on the bad list. Nissan (and Infinity) cars are on the 'good' list.

Problems with the engine major, engine cooling, transmission major, and drive system were weighted more heavily than other problems.
I guess you have to subscribe to ConsumerReports.org get a better idea of the age and miles being compared. They do mention a seven year old Lexus SUV as an example.

We've got two of the best (BMW M3 and Lexus GX470) and none of the worst. Our Nissan Xterra has been great, and even stood up to the abuse off-roading it.

Electrical is not weighted as much as other things - I guess.

I also think Audi's have an "edge of the cliff" which is not showing up in the survey.

89% of the best were Japanese makes. 66% of the worst were American. So Japan is better at being good than we are at being bad?

I too was completely unsurprised to see the best list filled with imports and the worst list filled with domestics. It'll be a long time before I buy another domestic.

Of course the Grand Cherokee made the worst list--good thing mine cannot read, I would hate for it to start disappointing me. I do find it interesting that Jeeps always tend to make the bad lists yet we have had four 2000-2005 Grands in the family and never had a bit of problems out of any of them other than normal wear and tear items (over 250k miles combined). Door lock actuators last about 75k miles is the only problem so far. My Jeep experience has been change oil, fill with gas (lots lately), do brakes every 50k miles, and drive--that is pulling 5000 lbs most weekends 7 months out of the year.

Granted, I did look at tons of ragged out POS's before I found my 03 last year that had been driven by an elderly lady and garage kept but can they all be that bad? Or are people just that dumb on buying used cars not to get under the vehicle and look at the underside. Maybe I should try my luck with Audi next time.

RMS problem, but i didn't think that's unique to 2003 , the older ones had it too, right?
