Does it have an oil cooler?

That's a good question- I understand there's a service bulletin out telling BMW technicians to install oil coolers on all 335is (only when customer's complain?).
And Dinan prescribes a much bigger one. Seems the twin turbos are heating up the engine ALOT more than BMW suspected and they may be trying to avoid a recall. Still it would be a cool car to own- just not $40K worth of cool IMO. |

I'm guessing the answer is probably "no".

I wonder if it's easier/cheaper for BMW to stick a bigger oil cooler on at the factory, and have to re-federalize the motor(?), or just tell dealers to swap it out quietly.

135i as a concept is great, BUT it's only 40 kg (88 lb) lighter than the 335i. Is that marginal weight advantage worth the compromises of the smaller car?

I doubt it has an oil cooler, dipstick or water temperature gauge- much less an oil pressure or oil temperature gauge.
I really like BMWs (and just bought a loaded X5 4.8) but suspect their late zeal for cost cutting is starting to catch up with them. New 3s don't even have the above and I was surprised to see my $70K monster has no water temp gauge either- not that I'm worried or anything. Thermostats and water pumps never break on BMWs. |

I am 99% positive that you are joking, because my dad's 93 525 has a brand new thermostat and waterpump within the last 9 months.

Not sure if that is true, with similarly equipped cars, but even if it is, it's still 88 lbs and $10,000+ lighter.

Love the E30 M3.
As far as a comparo test, it will be very predictable and cliche filled, like a 996 v. '87 Carrera comparo. "135i will wipe the floor with the E30 in every performance category, and will do it with the a/c putting out 39 degree air and the radio at full blast. But the E30 is lighter feeling, more 'raw,' and 'tossable,' and more 'like a go-kart." The 135i will definitely kill the E30 M3 for every day street driving. The 135i is going to be a torque monster. It will have more torque at 1200 rpm than the M3 makes at peak rpm. The M3 was pretty gutless down low. |

The unladen weight of the 135 is 3378 lbs (from bmwusa.com) The 335 is 3571 lbs (from bmwusa.com) Thats a 193 pound difference While that is still not the difference I would've hoped for in the smaller car, it is still pretty significant

Guys I was being facetious. One or the other broke on every BMW I have ever owned. It's only a matter of time.

I'm sorry, but this car is hideous. Sometimes they look bad in photos and look good once you see them on the road. Not so with this latest Bangle disaster. It was a very simple design exercise: take the e46 coupe, un-check the 'Preserve Aspect Ratio' on your photo software and shrink it down.

LOL, the shrunk 3 series does look like the 1.
Still, I think in real life the 1 will look pretty good. It looks super small/shrunk in the pictures, but it isn't a really small car and should look better proportioned in person. |
