I need a cheap, bulletproof handheld GPS.
I went offroad riding in Prescott Nat. Forest yesterday and it was about as intense an adventure as I've ever had. 60 miles of snow, water crossings, mud, rock, slush, sand and gravel, amazing views and pure adrenaline. We seemed to just get lucky and kept running into folks who knew where they were going and told us where to head next. I'd like to do some more exploring around here, but want a GPS next time. As I rode through knee deep water and got jolted enough to knock an internal organ loose, I need something that's totally bulletproof and not so nice that it's gonna sting if I lose or destroy it. Oh yeah, and it has to let me know where I am and where I'm going. What say you guys?

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx or one of the eTrex models. The pricier Colorado models now have 3-D mapping (Digital elevation modelling):

Agree with the Garmin. I have 4 of them in various flavours and love the product and support.

I have the Garmin 60csx and it goes everyplace I do. Lightweight and weather sealed. Runs on regular AA batteries. A 1gb microSD can hold almost the entire country's street maps plus some topo maps.
I was a bit bummed to see the prices of the (not included) maps and software, but this thing has been so useful I have no regrets.

The Quest is not as rugged as the 60CSx, nor is it waterproof. The 60CSx can float.

My Magellan Meridian is maybe 6yrs old and goes hunting with me. Waterproof, floats, simple.
Not sure about the road mapping of the newer models (i use mine to mark blind sites, center of the river for bad fog, etc).

One of the garmin eTrex. I have an older color one that goes everywhere with me on the dirtbike. I have it in a Pelican case that is padded, and I have taken some nasty falls. I just upload the part of the area (usually just the state) and I am good to go. The mapping has lots of the trails I ride, and worst case scenerio, I just head back to the way point I marked as the camp site.
There are some pretty slick mounts available for the GS, I had one on mine. Bill |
