under armour should I?

I play jv ball (2nd string tackle) and well my nike slim doesn't quite do the job on gamedays.
well long story short. i've been bumped to 1st string. and am wondering if any one has used under armour, should i go a size lower?

I love my under armour stuff! The fit is perfect for me. From my experience, their stuff is sized just a tad bigger than Nike sizes. I mean really, really slight. But that's just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt.

I like the under armor stuff under my hockey gear.
I look at it as a (almost) full body compression bandage!
The bike short length is great for tight hamstrings and the long heat gear tee is good for old guys playing sports they should probably give up.
Very durable stuff, I have had one set for well over 5+ years.

Why would moving to varsity make you change sizes? If it fits, it fits.

And if you play tackle, you shouldn't need underarmor. Leave that fancy stuff for the nancy boys catching the ball.

You didn't say if that's offensive or defensive tackle. On offense, make sure you know your assignments, have a good stance (you'd be amazed at how much a bad stance gives away the play), listen for audibles, and DON'T FORGET THE SNAP COUNT!! On defense, make sure you know your responsibilities (outside contain, etc..), any stunts, and the down and distance. I played for 3 seasons in HS and 4 in college with the same crappy 1/2 T-shirt (it was lucky). By the time I was done with it, it was a church shirt (it was Holy). At least I washed it, unlike some of my teammates.

Worry less about your gear, and make sure you know what you're doing out there. The gear won't make you faster, smarter or play better.

Seriously. Our O-line coach would harp at us at practice if our toes were even the slightest bit crooked. Not to mention randomly swiping our down hands out. Lord help you if you fell on your face...

Another tip for the 'big' leagues: make sure you know the entire lines' responsibilities.

Naw. It has nothing to do with all that skill/focus/discipline/determination stuff. You're probably just not wearing the exact right underwear.

Seriously though, I wear that baselayer stuff backpacking. It's the only way to go. Dries just like that. In the mountains, cotton kills.

Good advice!

The best player on my HS team was a ferocious linebacker. His family was poor. He wore hand me down cleats that had split from the sole. On game day I would tape his shoe on his foot then screw in the cleats.

He wore a ratty half-T under his ratty pads. No arm protection. Even his socks had no elastic left and drooped around his ankles.

His look was extremely old school. He didn't care. He was ferocious and talented. He was our team captain all through school. Underarmor? Mike Farrell would have laughed at you.

Isn't that always the case? The best players typically don't care about the look as much as they care about the results.
Under Armour was started and developed by a former college football player who wanted something that helped deal with the sweat.
Overall a good product that is worth it, just don't get caught up in the look as much as the performance.

dude I wore the cheap-o-walmart stuff. I was one of the starting DE's at my highschool. You don't need UA. It's not what you wear, but how you play.

Walmart!?!? Ha! You don't know cheap. Laneco was cheap. (no offense to the poster named Laneco btw). Laneco was a local chain of stores in NJ and PA and their stuff was amazingly lame.

Actually, the walmart stuff is pretty darn good-I have both for motorcycle use, and prefer the walmart-the underarmour has a weird chemical smell.

I play D tackle. It took 3 games from 5th string to 1st...
I noticed alot of the the other lineman buy some pretty nice UA. you know monkey see monkey do..

Good for you. Real men play D.

Here are some real tips for you:

Don't wear any arm pads, it gives them someplace to hold you.

Get spare shoelaces and lace them in and out of the holes in your jersey to make it as tight as possible. Again, less places to hold you.

Watch lots of film. Make note of how badly most running backs sell draw plays and screen plays. When you see that, settle down your rush, get square and slide to ball.

Work on your swim, rip and bull rush techniques. Its a long night, and you need lots of tricks.

Do everything you can to get faster. Plyometrics, running with weights, drop a few pounds, whatever. Speed is so important.

Be a smart player. Learn the signals, know the defensive sets. Know where you need to be and where your fellow players need to be. Listen to the offense you're playing against. Figure out their audible signal. Might be a jersey color. Listen for their lineman when they forget the snap count. You might hear "check" and a response like "check A" - that means its on one.

Lastly, be a leader and lead by example. Don't run smack with the other team or cheap shot, but pound them into the ground before the whistle blows.
