CC Fraud!!

2 time in 2 years!!

Amex calls me this evening, someone is trying to charge on my Amex in NOLA.

I am in florida.

I pull up my recent activity, pretty sneeky, 1 errant charge in January for $20 to a internet site.

Again in Feb $20

Again in March $20

Then 5 days ago, tons of charges, about 12 Autotrader Adds, 10 internet website hosting charges, and a bill w/ godaddy for $250.

Amex canceled my card (new one on the way) and now we are going though and killing all the charges.

Fun stuff.....

It happened twice to me with the same CC company, about a year or so apart. First time, they bought 2,500.- worth of alcohol. Second time, they (different people) hit up Home Depot for about $2500.-, but they hit the limit on the second attempt. There were also a few misc charges. I have no idea how they got the number the first time, but I suspect that the second, they were sitting next to a gas station and when I put my card in, they were able to "listen in" and get my number. Easily resolved both times, but it's a pain to change your online billing info.

Yup, the fun starts tomorrow, this is my business card so all my Cel phones, utilities, web hosting blah blah blah are all going to need to be contacted with the new #.

I would love to know how they got it.

Amex has a ID protection unit I am going to call them tomorrow and set up whatever I have to to protect myself.

BTW- AMEX rocks they just removed every charge on my CC that I did not recognize no questions asked. It took us about an hour to get through the process but well worth the time.

My wife is convinced its from using my CC for online purchases but I always look to make sure I am secure before I begin.

This blows....

Too bad you couldn't have put the Audi lease buyout on the AMEX. Oh well, live and learn..

You're supposed to drive 100 miles, go charge up a new plasma screen then beat feet home and THEN call to report it compromised. Geez, don't they teach you kids anything these days?

That sucks Jim....my dad and and have been heavy online shoppers for 5+ plus years now and have never had any problems...but a few years ago we were in Aruba for vacation and we think someone took down our info or cloned the card when we handed it to them to pay at a restaurant. A couple weeks after we got back, my dad was flying to Boston and charges popped up in Venezuela and Las Vegas at the same time. It got sorted out very quickly with Visa.

Happened to me with Visa issued through Bank of America. The issue was traced to a Maryland telemarketer and B of A wouldn't discuss it any further with me. They did delete the fraudulant charges from my account and issued a new card.
This crap with cc's just adds to the heap of security issues honest hard working Americans have to face and deal with and the costs are adding up. It started five years ago when I had a security system installed in my home and a monthly payment for monitoring. Had to purchase a cell phone in case the system was activated and I would be notified and another monthly payment. Then with this cc thing I started monthly credit monitoring...another monthly payment.
Except for a few businesses like Pelican and the airlines I don't make any purchases online and will not bank online until the systems resolve the security issues 100%. I'll monitor my banking accounts, mortgage and brokerage stuff and avoid online transactions that can otherwise be done in person over the telephone.

There are a few banks that offer online 'disposable' or temporary credit card for online purchases. I think amex had that a while back. it won't protect you from handing over your card but at least for online purchases.

I had a similar issue last year. A couple days after getting some tires at a local mom-and-pop tire shop, a couple charges for Barnes & Noble showed up. I called Barnes and Noble customer dis-service, and they pretty much told me to get bent - they wouldn't do anything. I called the issuing bank, and they opened a dispute. Over the next couple of weeks, several more charges popped up, and I disputed them all, and terminated the card. The total was a little under $1000.

What I found interesting was that nobody was interested in following up on who placed the fraudulent charges.

When my CC infor was stolen a year ago, I went out and got a Discover card for online purchases. Now I have separate cards for online and in-person purchases, and I can get temporary numbers for the Discover Card.

Now if my info gets stolen again it should be easier to track where the fraud occured and I won't be without a credit card.

this kind of stuff pisses me off. i hate thieves.

just a few days ago, my wife and i took some friends to dinner. i offered to grab the tab. i coughed up my credit card, and the kind korean lady proceeded to tell me in her loudest voice that my card was declined. *****. well, she showed me the printout, and no, it didnt say "declined", it said "cancelled". WTF? i handed over my CheckCard, and i took care of the tab. i immediately called the bank. turned out some hackers got in and downloaded a bunch of our account numbers. they hacked a vendor i shop with. they cancelled everyones card! i had to be issued a new account. what a pain in the arse!

i hope these thieves get cancer and die.

I was recently hit after buying tires online. The vendor got hacked and a bunch of numbers were stolen is the story. They hit me for $2200 worth of tickets through Lufthansa overseas someplace which maxed the card, and then tried to put another $5k on the card. After the first charge my credit union locked the card. It took me about 10 minutes on the phone and a faxed affidavit to say that I didn't make the charges to set everything right. I've got the same account still but with new numbers.

I posted on the miata board because edgeracing.com sells lots of tires to miata folks, and found that there were at least another half dozen folks that had also been stuck after buying from them. I called them and they admitted that they had been hacked and said that they had been told not to notify their customers.

I Was about to purchase from them online, is it safer to call them with your number or do they still enter your numbers into the system that gets hacked?

I was going to ask if you've recently purchased from Edge Racing. I did last year and my cc info was stolen. Later I found that the same thing happened to another p-car guy.

Recently over on the Miata board it became known that Edge Racing was hacked. It's supposedly been fixed but for the time being I may just phone my orders in.

There's a post there from someone at Edge Racing about the situation.
