missing money in MD
My Aunt calls me and tells me I am on a missing money list. I call to find out what it's all about. Turns out some stocks I had from a previous job were sold and the money turned over to the state's missing money department. The money is there waiting for me, but the sucky part is the stocks have doubled since. So my questions are: Who can sell my stocks without my permission? Is there anything I can do? I've been saving these for a rainy day. Now I am out about $5k!!

That sounds a bit bizarre.
Interested to hear about it.

Were you getting statements the whole time? This does seem bizarre.
I too have previous employer stocks, but I still get statements from them.

Many employee plans have force-out clauses if the balances are small at separation, usually around $5k. Sounds like that's what happened. If you changed addresses the check probably got lost, and eventually escheated to the state.
