Hippies protesting the war
I drove through a small town in CT yesterday and saw a small group of (older) Hippies with signs protesting the war. I'm from PA and this is the first time I've seen this. I know demonstrations happen during certain events but yesterday was just another day. Is this happening in your towns?

Every once in a while the rich kids at the private college in town protest things.
They also invited Michael Pfleger to come speak a few months ago. ![]()

In your best Eric Cartman voice,
"I don't hate black people - I hate hippies! They sit around talking about changing the world but all they really do is smoke pot and stink"

The serious use of the term "hippies" reveals more about you than about them.

I thought hippies became extinct during the golden age of Disco.

I haven't seen a hippy in twenty or thirty years...
But it is common to see average well dressed middle class people standing beside major thoroughfares holding signs calling for an end to the war around here. ![]()

I saw a hippy in the Beer Brewing store, this week. He had a tie-dyed shirt, long hair and a hat, and everything. I didn't get close enough to smell him...

Honestly people are so much into playing "dress up" (see: gangsters that are not in a gang... bikers that have a day job) it is getting hard to know who is what anymore. What exactly does define a hippy anyway?

Ah... I get it... gay=guppies, Porsche=puppies, SUV=suppies?
But wait a minute, where do we get yuppies? Wasn't it supposed to be "young upwardly mobile professionals"? Wouldn't that make them yumpies? I'm so confused!

One thing my part of upstate NY has is many small colleges and universities of all stripes. And plenty of relatively cheap old farms and wineries all over the place(Finger Lakes district). This means one thing: old, middle aged and young hippie or counter culture types. Volvo and Saab drivers. We occasionally get a takeover of a Congressman's office or protests over the war or whatever. Adds immensely to the character of the area. Keeps the local newsrags entertained. I doubt they are hippies actually, since they all seem to be well fed and coifed(long braids, guys and gals), and have legal representation if necessary, and have nice rides. I don't find their protesting offensive, actually it is good for the 'ol Republic to hear some opposition and from folks willing to put it on the line, so to speak. Glenn

You may very well have seen Leonard Cohen.
He's Canadian but I'm fairly certain that he lives in CT. And he does do road side protests.

Actually the term is enjoying a come back. High schoolers sometimes refer to long haired unemployed stoner-types as "hippies". It seems to carry no political association.

I'm not exactly sure who these folks were, but I learned from some colleagues today, here in New London there was a guy who protested around the train station as well as the Groton Naval Base every day since the start of the war. Apparently back in December he passed away and that is when other folks came out to protest in his honor I guess. There was even a large life size photograph of the guy there. Hippies from the 60's were before my time but seeing a display such as this one from these older folks was certainly an interesting sight to see. I haven't seen anything like that since spending some time out in Eugene.

30's guys have 3-4 days beard growth, hair that looks like it was combed with an egg beater? Jeans, sandals or skateboard/Nike shoes? The one that REALLY cracks me up since I heard George Carlin's take on it is the guy wearing the cowboy hat, boots, Western shirt with pearl buttons and big belt buckle. We got a lot of horse ranches around, do we? There's a real big NEED for cowpunchers now? Its all posing. Applies to me too. I work in the heavy civil construction industry in management. We all wear jeans or Dockers, steel toed work shoes, golf type shirts except on Friday's when every male pretty much wears a Hawaiian shirt. I think we all do it. Incidentally and in closing....which of you 20 year old guys will admit to wearing the up-in-the-middle, Cupie doll haircuts? I almost want to point and laugh out loud when I see that. Trust me, you're gonna just LOVE pictures of you wearing that when you're 40 or 50! ![]()
