Pelicans / Pelican Head Hunters, looking for summer employment / internship

PPOT has a wide variety of people who work in a wide variety of sectors, so I thought to give this a shot.

In a nutshell, I'm a 21 year old student at University of Kentucky majoring in Mathematics and minoring in Computer Science. I'm looking for a summer job/internship (or if local to Lexington, a longer term job) with a company working in IT related fields. I don't have much of a preference on industry, I'll work anywhere. I'm ambitious, independent but still able to work in groups, and I enjoy implementing, researching, and designing solutions to various problems. I like being early instead of "just in time."

I have a wide variety of computer experience, ranging from building mid-range workstations from components to troubleshooting, maintaining and installing various Operating Systems, such as Windows 200, 2003, XP and SUN Solaris (Intel) and software packages. Have in numerous cases used advanced tools to aid in detection and removal of virus' from Windows systems. Knowledge of C++ and Object Oriented Design principles; have used both SUN Studio 12 and Visual Studio 2005 for software development. Picked up enough Perl in a few hours to hack out a solution to one of my Computer Science assignments.

With regards to networking, I setup and currently maintain the Local Area Network for a local Lexington company, including configuring the Cisco PIX 501 with Virtual Private Network capabilities. Also have experience configuring and securing wireless networks.

As far as Mathematics goes, I have taken Calculus and Number Theory courses, and am beginning to study Graph Theory, Operations Research and more Number Theory, both in and outside of school. Trying to pursue a keen interest in Cryptology, as well.

I am looking for a position that would allow me to use my background in Computer Science and Mathematics to maintain existing and develop new technologies in any capacity that would allow me learn and grow, both intellectually and professionally.

I am currently located in Lexington, KY, but will be in the Chicago land area come mid-May. Strong possibility I could stay in Lexington for employment opportunities. Would also consider temporarily re-locating for employment during the summer.

If anyone has anything for me, a lead, offer, anything, I greatly appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I can be reached via Private Message or e-mail, gavin DOT jones AT uky.edu. Phone number and/or references available upon request.

Wayne, that could certainly be an interesting proposition....

Tom, thanks! If you come across anything, I'd love to hear it. Always wanted to go to Texas.

Legion, thanks. I'll look into it and see where it goes.

PoP, don't know AutoCAD, although now I sort of wish I did:-P So far the only exposure I've had to Engineering courses in college is Software Engineering (which was a sham), so I haven't been near it.

Len, I wouldn't be so bold as to turn down a position like that. What sort of compensation package do you have available? Haha..

Thanks guys
