Actually, this is what women complaint about after catching the meaty guys. They complain about 'no flexibility.' On the other hand, women are like fishermen..."they complain about what they caught and brag about the one that got away!" :D:D

Legion,

Good for you. Just be careful about your joints. I lift weights just to remain lean. Unfortunately, I am beginning to retire from weight lifting after seeing Jack LaLanne. He used to be buff, but now look at him. I guess we can never fight time and gravity.

I hit 340 for the first time yesterday.

Yes, I am capable of doing more, but not capable without doing injury. I move steadily and in a deliberate fashion.

My right wrist was giving me some problems for a few weeks. I went out and bought a wrist brace and wore it the week of Thanksgiving. The pain slowly went away during the course of the week. I did a light bench press the following Monday and my wrist started to bother me again. I bought some weight lifting gloves that support my wrists and I've had no problems since.

Rodsrsr 12-13-2008 03:22 PM

I never go for the max, but the other day I did 315 8 times. I try not to go up in weight until I can rep it at lease 12 times.

KaptKaos 12-13-2008 03:43 PM

It's been a long time since I've been lifting. When I did lift, I changed from the pyramids I did when in college to lighter weights and more reps. As I got older, I didn't want to increase muscle mass, which is what pyramids do, but wanted to develop leaner muscle.

I am not sure what your goals are, but you should figure that out. Adding muscle mass may not be in your best interests long term.

Congrats on reaching 340. That's serious weight.

Damn, I thought you all were talking about the elusive Uncle Scrooge 2004 Eisner award comic, #335!
What a waste of time!

Chris, when reaching a certain level I believe recuperation is the single most important factor. Both regarding further improvements and staying out of injury. Be very careful not letting vanity cloud your judgment reading your bodies distress signals.

What about a few pics then?! :)

345 this week. After my warmup, I did one set of six, one set of five, and one set of three (ran out of steam on that last one).

I am very slow-going in moving up. I know how to read my body and this week I felt like I had the energy to move up. I bought some gloves that support my wrists and set a 2 x 4 on my chest (helps protect the shoulders by preventing me from getting too low with the bar).

I fully realize that at some point I will have to scale back the lifiting--I'm just enjoying while I can and being cautious so as not to cause long-term problems. I did do 50 minutes on the treadmill (900 calories for me) before the lifting.

Of the group of guys I work out with, I'm the little guy. One guy does 360, one 405, and one 430. They are much more aggressive than me (and older) and I expect joint problems out of them any day.

Schumi 02-25-2009 12:04 PM

Reminds me of a good friend of mine that I don't get to see much anymore. We used to work out together regularly back long ago when I was in shape in high school and such. I weighed about 165 lbs and had a body fat percentage of 5.5%. I would squat around 350lbs, leg press 650, and bench near 200. Mind you, I was like 16 at the time so I felt pretty good about this.

Well, needless to say I torn up a knee and stopped lifting for a while, then stopped running, and stopped exercising all together in college.

Now I can't bench more than 200 still, and can no longer run 6 minute miles. I weigh 175 lbs (not a big change there ) but my body fat is around 15-17%, all of it beer gut.

My friend? He is a body builder, works as a trainer at a gym, and benches around 440lbs. He can squat over 1000. And we used to be right along side each other.

It's pretty amazing how much you can change with a good regiment and a year or two.

legion 02-25-2009 12:20 PM

Well Schumi, I have it all.

I can bench a decent amount, run pretty well, AND I have a decent beer gut!

HHI944 02-25-2009 02:10 PM

My bench is horrible ( I can get a few reps at 315 out), but in the last few months I've hit a few goals...... 545 deadlift and single rep 1800 leg press..............now on to breaking 600 and 2000.

For reference, I'm 6' even 267-270 and hover between 18-19%bf

and yes, I do have the ' Gym membership: $50, Protein powder: $40, Seeing you get the hell out of my way: Priceless' T-shirt.

You might be ready to take on a rampaging chimp.

335 is pretty damn good. Getting back into freeweights is on my "things I'd like to do" list. Right now it's all about cardio and dropping pounds getting ready for a big cycling event this July. Maybe after that, some strength training. Way to go!

serge944 02-26-2009 12:16 AM

Never repped past 295 before I injured myself in one way or another... Whether its a broken thumb or torn rotator cuff skiing, or a dislocated shoulder in a bar fight. Sigh.

Jims5543 02-26-2009 09:05 AM

Back in my gym rat days I used to bench 350 and had a good friend that could lift 375 he was an ex marine and in his 30's at the time, I was in my early 20's.

The killer was we were both 5'8" tall and weighed about 165-170 lbs, it used to piss off the big boys int he gym so bad that we were lifting as much as them and were 1/2 the size.

I got to pay for that 10 years later when I found out the abuse I was putting on my shoulders doing straight bar benching has given me the onset of arthritis.

I only mess with dumbells now, it takes a lot more strength and balance to handle them and a lot less stress on my joints.

MOMO3.2 02-27-2009 08:26 AM

A nice goal to reach with the bench press is benching 2x your own body weight.

I was able to do that at age 20. Unfortunately, at age 49, I have not touched a weight in nearly 20 years. I sure miss the camaraderie, good times, and Winstrol we had at the gym...

Legion, me thinks you may be like Bruce Willis' charcter in "Unbreakable".

I say enjoy it while you can Legion. As an aging person that once had a physically imposing presence (mind you, I was and am a kind, gentle person like you), I can tell you unequivocally, that people begin to treat you with alot less respect during the waning years. It really does all come down to the law of the jungle. If someone thinks you can beat them to death with their own limb after you have detached it, they tend to think twice before giving you attitude.

At 6'1" and 255 lbs., I doubt I'll be doing 510 anytime soon.

Every time I get back together with my college friends, the women always tell me how muscular I look. I find it kind of funny because my body image is that of a tall, skinny guy with a beer gut.

There are a few guys like that in my gym (ironically most of were also in the corps) That cocky walk of theirs stops when you take things to the power rack.

dentist90 02-27-2009 11:17 AM

I dead lift 160 lbs every day... right out of bed. (And even that requires some effort!) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pray.gif

Tobra 02-27-2009 09:17 PM

I thought this would have picture of a guitar like Lucille

I don't like doing a lot of lifting, get swole up too quick, gotta stick to low weight; high reps
