Illinois HB 4357 and HB758

It looks like Illinois HB 4357 will be called for a vote today. This is labeled an "assault weapons ban", but the language of the bill would ban anything semi-automatic (rifles, shotguns, or handguns) or greater than .50 (including muzzleloaders)--unless you register them with the State Police.

http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=4357&GAID=9&GA=95&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=34861&SessionID=51

HB758 (outlawing private sales of firearms) was called for a vote in the house yesterday and did not pass by two votes--a little too close for my comfort.

***

While trying to research HB 4357 last night, I came across this document:

http://www.icpgv.org/pdf/policy3.pdf

It looks like it was written by a high school freshmen who did absolutely no research, as nearly every sentence contains misinformation, mischaracterization, or an outright fabrication.

I would like to see more police on the street to help enforce existing laws and less new laws to restrict the populace. Of course that's never going to happen. Oh well.

Before a new law can hit the books there should be two requirements:

1. Two existing laws are repealed

2. The law in question must have an expiration date or other "sunset clause"

Our society is probably the most over-legislated, over-restricted and over-taxed in history. We're far worse off today than our forefathers were under the British Crown.

Legion, what are you doing up there, you sound like one of "us".

Jim, I don't think there are any police anymore. They all want to be paramilitary thugs. I say that with complete respect to real policemen, they are a dying breed. My Father was a policeman for 20 years, and retired . He taught me that 99.9% of the time any situation can be settled by just listening to people, treating them like a person, and to NEVER assume everyone is a guilty idiot. He only had to draw his gun once, and never fired it. In our little town of 10,000 it takes 3 squad cars to do a traffic stop now, and they all have their fingers on the trigger!

Jeff, you make entirely too much sense. Keep up the good work.

I have said the same thing many times. You're a smart mofo bro.

Honestly though, i think we -are- better off than modern day Brits are. Not saying much, sure..but at least it's something.

Yes, that's a terrifying mentality. And highly prevalent.

Nothing in life is as scary to me as our own government. Now the feds will be DNA swabbing anyone who is arrested for any reason.

Not convicted...arrested.

I cannot speak to the thug thing, but I do feel like more effort goes into revenue generation activities and not into crime prevention. This is just an opinion, not necessarily a fact, coming from someone who lives in the heart of a major city.

We recently had two swat-team members suspended for showing up to a "standoff" (a drunk guy who refused to come out of his home--BFD) drunk.

Kinda scary.

Rick, word on the street is that Farfax County has relaxed that now that you've moved to AZ.

The all too common police ocifer juiced up bodybuilder look with a shaved head freaks me the fuch out.

I went to a 10k run over the weekend and the teenage 'Junior Police' were decked out like swat team members. WTF?
