WTF is this Safari crap? Save me from endless "update" hell!
I'm getting SOOOOOOOOOOOOO sick and tired of having to download (and install, generally requiring a reboot) of this-or-that update, service pack, patch, whatever every time I sit down at my computer. While I'm all for making sure I'm protected from the latest virus or bugaboo or the last in fifty million security vulnerabilities in the Microsoft armor, this is getting ridiculous.
Adobe just wasted another 5-10 minutes of my life downloading and installing this "Safari" thing that I'll probably never use. WTF? Anyone else getting sick of this? Adobe is a frequent offender. There are others too, but it seems almost a daily thing with them. Have to say it's getting a tad old with Firefox too. . . |
I can't complain about too many updates. Firefox does it on a restart of itself, so I barely ever notice. The most frustrating one for me is the fact that Apple seems to want me to download a new version of iTunes every 3 weeks.

I like updates.
Just got Safari 3.1.1 today and it's much improved, IMO. YMMV. Best, Kurt |
Good time to ask this then:
I have Windows XP home version on the PC. I turn the PC on in the morning and off every night. What I notice is that 5 out of 7 times, at turnoff, Windows installs an update. Thats an awful lot of updates and it causes me to wonder what is going on. Any one else see this much update activity? Just curious. Curt |

Hi Slodave
Yeah, I was more concerned with the sheer number of updates. It just seems like a lot of updates, you know, a new Windows update every day or two on average. Just seems a bit weird and was wondering if this is what others are experiencing. Curt |
Is there a way to make the system do this when I'm not home or something? It's awfully annoying to either have to sit there while my bandwidth is sucked away on this stuff, or have to reboot, or scroll through pages of EULAs (that nobody ever reads) to find a checkbox I need to click to continue, etc.
I'm seriously thinking about just getting an "off-network" computer with all my applications and data and stuff on, then have an "on network" PC with JUST a web browser. I know it's just a nuisance, but I find it extremely annoying to have to go through this with the regularity I'm forced to. My own computer (and time) is hijacked by this stuff all the time - and I don't see what it gains me in 90% of the cases (virus/spyware updates I can live with & understand). |
I keep my laptop "light & lean" (i.e. no personal data (kept on removable drives), no Windows updates, no virus checkers, no NUTHIN' :)), since it's primarily just a web browser, and I only occasionally run other apps. I don't worry about it getting corrupted (hasn't yet), as I'll just restore it back to original if/when that time comes.

Using Safari is the problem. I love Camino. FireFox is nice as well, just a little slower.

Gosh... we are complaining about Apple are we?
So their computers do have warts after all! :) Do not seem to have this issue with my Dell... |

I use Firefox myself and Thunderbird for e-mail. Firefox updates while you are browsing and then just gives you a little pop-up the next time you start it up. Done.

This is a Windows PC.
Is there a way to set up the thing so it automatically runs all the updates, agrees to all the stupid disclaimers and just gets it over with while I'm at work or something? Sitting here for minutes at a time twiddling my thumbs waiting for the system to download one more useless update I'll never benefit from is pretty much insufferable. I'm ready to seriously yank this PC off the Internet and never have to deal with it again. |

I have also stopped using Firefox due to how it handles updates. Firefox also has this annoying lag, when I open a new window I start typing the url right away. Seems Firefox's buffer is slow to keep up and misses the first 3 characters. Really irritating. |
If one can overcome his/her anti-Apple mentality, the latest Safari is a really nice browser and probably the most compatible with the modern 2.0 web. It's not perfect and does have some warts, but it is now my 90% browser, with Firefox seeing less and less usage.
I haven't used the Windows version of Safari, but reports and critiques from PC publications are very positive. FWIW. Best, Kurt |
