Jim & I chatted about this on his way back from the Dragon by phone, and another friend, a 40+year PCA member and I have talked about this a good bit.
True, the new Porsche owners didn't buy the cars for the same reason we did, most of us bought them because we drive them, the new group, which has infected PCA like a bad plague, lease the cars so they can say the drive (or are driven, as the new cars do that, at least most of them) a porsh:eek: These people think that they are above everyone else and don't think that Porsche cars built before 2000 count, but we know, that when Dr. Porsche passed in 1998 (last year of the air cooled Porsche) that the real part of Porsche died:( It use to be that no just anyone could by a Porsche, not because of the cost, but because they use to require a large amount of respect to drive well (anyone who has driven early 911s & the 1st 930s know what I'm talking about) and not look like a fool. The real Porsche can be intimidating, but the new ones do everything but give you a hand job, the gives many new to Porsche Yuppies a false sense of greatness. |

A group of us talked about this at RRRIII, and another group at the 12 Hours of Sebring, I have seen what has happened locally and on the west coast talked about the same thing, not talking about old owners buying new cars, but the new blood that comes in with the easy lease of new cars. I even posted on a 986 owner compenting, because I was wearing a Porsche hat, while filling my Suburban at a local gas station, telling me, that I wished that I owned a Porsche, true, I looked a bit grubby, I had been down at the farm unloading http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208749716.jpg Buddies from coast to coast, north & south and seen the same thing:( |
In my experience, all new car owners are like this, especially an expensive one. This hasn't changed over the years. The guy who bought a new 356 probably didn't know it'd be a classic when he bought it. He thought it was cool, then sold it when something else caught his eye and/or repair bills mounted. The 2nd and subsequent owners were more likely the enthusiasts who valued the car more than the PO.
How many here bought their 911 off the showroom, or what happened to the first, last or inbetween new car(s) you use to own? Can I rest my case? Sherwood |

Driving up the 5 this morning, on my way to work, a black Cayman pulled up beside me and gave me a big thumbs up, I waved back, the first Cayman to do that. I don't expect anything here anyway, just too many cars around. His plate was "DAS KROC" Kinda made my day.

I don't know, this is at least the 3rd thread on this subject, and it has been brought up in other threads. I get what Sherwood is saying, but from what I remember, it was always the old school guys not wanting to accept the new Porsches, this appears to be just the opposite. I drive a Carrera, track a 944 and am restoring a 914, so where do I fit;) Onthe picture line up, it would depend how he asked, if he was smug & cocky (there are a few of those in the local region) or nice & pleasant, face it, we have all lined our cars up at one point or another for pix. |
Cliques within a clique - I'd move - even offer to take their picture besides their beloved cars.
I'm a car guy at heart - I have several friends that are corvette owners - we share friendly jabs - but when the day done - we are gearheads in common. I like to see everybody share their passion - at least they were out driving. |

You said he was polite so I can't resolve the superficial attitude part of it. You thought it was a relatively stupid request but say the Cayman photograph was not the point. Sounds like you have some preconceived opinions which may be well founded but really what's the big deal? Why do you think you have any right to an opinion of what THEY wanted in THEIR photograph. They could be the biggest bunch of condescending poser fuchwads on the planet but it's still their picture. If that were the case I would have moved on my own so as not to be associated with them. How would you feel if you were at Disney and wanted a pic of the family in front of the castle and someone came over and sat in the middle of your shot. Would it be a stupid request to ask them to move? |

Some of you guys are living in the (bitter) past. Plenty of new cars and new owners tracking the crap out of them here. And I see plenty of guys here with very nice older cars that keep them real shiny. Both are fine. But the reverse elitism gets old... |
In the late '60's we lived on a small ranchette about 10 minutes from all the canyon runs in SoCal...Westlake Village wasn't there yet, so we'd take East Portero Road and then head west up Hwy 23.
My Dad had a Lotus Europa in those days and used to do his, "mental health" runs on Fridays in the summer. He'd often return a few hours later with a line of four or five guys he'd met up with on his drives. All kinds of cars...lots of British in those days, always a 356 or early 911, Italian, a few Corvettes, etc. They'd light off the grill, lie to each other how cool they were and talk cars. They all had their make and model preferences, but you just got the sense they loved the same thing: cars:cool: But what do I know...I'm thinking of prepping and old Massey Fueguson I have in the barn for local Tractor Pulls. I'm alittle worried about the John Deere posuers, though;) |

Todd's post also addresses the fact that some of the cayman owners do track their cars etc. I think you're much more likely to find cayman owners as driving enthusiasts than even a new carrera owner. They are willing to pay more for a Boxster just because it has a hard top. Think about it. Poseurs want the name and convertibles (to be seen) IMO - the antithesis of a cayman. Now admittedly, we all would like to see more power.... |
I would say no problem and move, just look at the big picture and notice we are all car guys one way or another.

It amazes me that people can b!tch about how new Porsche owners don't drive their cars, then look down on Cayman, Boxster, 997, etc owners when they show up at a track or group drive. Pull your heads out of your asses people. Sure, many owners of new Porsches are total tools who want to brag that they own a Porshhhhhhhh. But there are some people that enjoy the drive. If I had the money to blow, I would happily buy a 997S or Cayman S and beat it to within an inch of it's life. I can't help but wonder if it's a little jealousy on the part of the air-cooled folks. Sure, you talk about the "real Porsche", blah blah, but that poser Cayman will smoke most anything air-cooled on the race track. I don't know, but the irony of Porsche owners acting like snobs when their cars cost less than a new Hyundai is amusing as hell.
The question at hand? I would have happily moved, and taken the pic for them. If the guy asked nicely, you're just being an ass by not letting them have their picture. I'm a car guy, so I would do it if it were Miatas, Corvettes, BMWs, etc. Ultimately it's one big hobby, like it or not. |

I love my Carrera and all that it stands for, but I wouldn't hesitate to trade it for a Cayman S if I had the chance. |

I don't want a Cayman or a Boxster, but it's good that there are people out who have enough enthusiasm to take pics of them in a line. I think we are all the same breed of owner, just they dig their Caymen and we dig the old stuff; each to their own. Nobody asked the 997 or 964 to move for this one, they were welcome, but if a few GT3 RSs had turned up to park next to the red C2 for a group shot, I'd have moved for them - that's what car guys do for each other: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rackDay044.jpg |
Here's a photo taken during a Boxster meet in June of 2006 in NC (Blowing Rock area) We had a mix of just about all the common variety Porsches, including 2 Caymans(none of these SUVs though). We had turbos, 911's, a 944 T and a ton of Boxsters. We ran into a 928 meet along the way, man were those guys uptight(like Corvette owners). We all got along and had a great time. By the way, most of the folks seemed to be owners and not leasees.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208824266.jpg

I was headed back to my car in the parking lot at the golf store/driving range and a fellow with a strong French accent starts asking me very smart questions and pointing out the interesting bits on my car.
I said you sure know your early 911's and then he pointed out his car; around the side of the building was a brand new grey 911S with all the goodies. On the way back home on I 95 I saw ahead an 80's Carrera Targa and raced up along side and gave a thumbs up - got nothing. He followed a few miles and then I let him go by. He didn't even look. I followed a bit and then went by again - he was talking on his cell phone. I kept going. It ain't about which cars, it's about which people. |
