Tabs in gona need a Pile of Cash
I'm gona need a whole bunch of money to get ahold of this Baby. It is a Cased Gibbs Farqueson Long Range Target Rifle circa 1880. I'm gona need around 25K to be competitive. These are rare, last one I saw was in March of 2005 and it went for $16,500. I woulda bid on it but I had allready bought something else outa that auction.

Is this something that you actually would fire, or is it an expensive wall hanging? Whatever, I dig all old mechanical things, just curious.
Good luck. Hope "Master Buffeter" means you are financially talented like Warren Buffet and can therefore afford the rifle.

Almost every old timer I buy I intend to shoot some day..at least once to try it out. Will I ever get around to it, probably not. These guns are still functional and one more scratch more or less won't matter that much.
Mostly on the newer collectables that one buys condition is paramount, one single blemish can mean quiet a bit of difference in price. So those tend to stay in the safe out of harms way.

For that price it had better come with brass, dies, and a couple of bullet molds. Maybe even a cleaning rod. What caliber is it?

The caliber is 461...which was the standard Brit Target caliber of the day. I don't have the details other than it is cased, and comes with the case for the sights.

I haven't seen that movie in years, but now that you say that...it does bear a striking resemblance, and is of the era.

Funny, I was thinking that tabs would have to change his name to Quigley if he got that gun. Cool movie.

The rifle used in the Quigly movie was an 1874 Sharps. The patchbox indicates it was converted from a military rifle. Caliber was .45-2 7/8", otherwise known as ".45-110". Straight .45 caliber case, 2 7/8" long. Think of a stretched .45-70, which has a 2.1" case.

Gibbs, along with every other British gun manufacturer, made the Farqueson pattern breech loading single shot in any number of guises. It was as generic a design back then as the 1911 has become today. They were actually far better rifles than most American single shots of the time. The Sharps Borchardt was in the same league, and maybe the Winchester Highwall. The rest of the American designs were very crude in comparison, like the '74 Sharps, Remington Rolling Block, Springfield Trapdoor, etc. The Ballard was elegant, but exceedingly weak. The Ruger Number 1, by the way, reflects Bill Ruger's love of the Farqueson design.

Jeff,
I know that you know your stuff. I have shot a Sharpes but don't really like the '74. Have you seen the '77 that Axtell makes? Really gorgeous. I know Carmen Axtell and have shot Creedmore matches with here a few times. Love to own one of her creations but they are spendy. Still just shooting High Walls. Speaking of Ballard, I was sad to see that they moved to Michigan. I have heard that their quality has taken a dive. Hope that's not true.

C. Sharps now makes a '77, but it's only available from their custom shop. About the same cost as the Axtell. C. Sharps still uses Badger barrels exclusively, so that is a big plus. I have one of their '75's in .45-70 and a '74 in .45-2.6 that are both capable of winning any match. I'm no fan of the '74 really, either. It is a big, clunky, crude action. I swear that big old side hammer rustles my hair on the way by. I only like it for its historical significance. I keep meaning to turn mine into a hunting rifle by putting a much shorter, lighter barrel on it. Right now it has a 34" #1 contour, and weighs over 14 pounds. That keeps the recoil down with the 540 grain Jones Creedmoor and the 550 grain Hoch that it likes, and it steadies it from that massive hammer fall, but it is still far from ideal as a match rifle. The Ballard is my favorite match rifle. I have an original Pacific in .45-70 that is also a proven match winner. The center hammer and very short, light fall really help. I had not heard about the "new" company moving, but I do know they have had ups and downs. Lots of changes in foremen, suppliers, etc. When Garbe and Brooks were there (I know Garbe is gone, not sure about Brooks) I heard they were making good stuff. Seems like most of these little companies go up and down, usually with changes in personel. There are only so many guys that can build these right.

Each of these indivdually will make Jeffy cry. The top is an orginal Rigby Long Range Rifle circa 1877 and the bottom is a Whitworth Military Match circa 1860 in near new condition.

Jee-zus, Tabs, those are beautiful rifles. Does Parker-Hale still import the Whitworths? Are they even still made?
I know the new "Rigby" in California could never, in its wildest dreams, ever hope to build anything like that one. Shame that one of the proudest names in the biz is now in that god forsaken land.
