There are two reasons I don't go in the ocean anymore, ever.
One, it's mankind's toilet, and that's gross. Two, I enjoy being on top of the food chain. Using myself as bait kind of defeats that purpose. I won't get eaten by a shark, or bear, or crocodile, or tiger. And that isn't by accident. |

People do get killed by sharks. People do also drown. Including lifeguards. There are plenty of awesome things to do in life without subjecting oneself to an environment that our species is certainly not designed for :D <--- Land Lover. |

good god...do some of you guys live wrapped in bubble wrap?!?!?
I find the "risk inconsistency" pretty amazing around this place. |
you just need a surf rack for your aprilia, and you're set!

It's all about choices. I used to surf about 3 times a week when i was in high school and college, San Onofre was my favorite spot.
Now I don't like the idea of going in sewage water where there are big animals that might eat me, so I go to the Colorado river. A zillion times cleaner, biggest thing there is a catfish or bass, and I can run my wave runners there all the time without worrying about the saltwater eating up all the wiring etc. there are lots of places and things to do without going in the ocean. But if that's you thing, go with it. Not for me. How many times do they close a beach in So Cal because of sewage related bacteria? too often. Way too often. It's always there but most of the time it's within their "acceptable limits. Not mine, theirs. |

As for me I spent another 2 hours out at Zuma today in near perfect conditions. Just a little small, but glassy and hollow even at 1pm. I beat...need coffee. oh wait, the caffeine will kill me :p |

We all have fears, and often they are tied to lack of knowledge. I respect the ocean immensely because I know how bad it can get. I've studied it and lived next to it all my life. It is where life essentially started, and holds a siren song for many. If you've never ridden a wave, you can't really understand the joy that erupts from your soul as you get covered up in the green room. But it certainly isn't for everyone. Water was 56 degrees today (not bad), and I've been so cold before that I could barely think straight (well, as straight as I normally can). As for fears, I have pretty nasty acrophobia. Even two stories up I can get weak kneed. Pretty funny that I climbed telephone poles for a living for a year or two :p |
