Fatal Shark Attack in Solana Beach, CA!
Just saw this on the news!
Anyone have more info? I lived in and around Solana Beach for a long time and don't even recall a story about a shark attack. |
Local news says it was a triathlete - group of 10 were swimming together.
|
So it was a buffet then?
|
should have trained harder , if your slow..you gotta go

Unfortunately, it looks like the City of Solana Beach will have to modify their website:

I don't have to outswim the shark. I just have to outswim you!

I just got off the phone with my wife. We're planning to enroll our kids in Life Guard camp but now the wife is waffling. It took two years for me to convince her that Shark attacks are uncommon and that the kids will be safe and now this :(
|
Calvin will still be doing surf camp this summer. And if the weather holds we'll both be at Zuma this weekend. Shark attacks are really rare in SoCal.

Shark attack map

Compared to the numbers of people that go to the beach the numbers on that chart are beyond tiny. Nevertheless, there WAS a person in each of those 54 fatal cases.
I suppose, its like worrying about your plane crashing or a fatal car accident. Still, the idea of knowing for a few moments you were being torn limb from limb and being eaten to death by another living thing?....sends shivers down my bacck. |
just another risk to benefit calculation. Everything in life has risk...just depends on what is important to you and what feeds your soul. If I couldn't ride waves, my life would be seriously diminished, and the time I spend with my son at the beach is pretty priceless.
|
If you worry about it - dont swim in the ocean. Every so often the local news will go up in a plane and show footage of people swinning with sharks and no one knows about it. Well except for a few.
This was interesting - these are unprovoked mind you there were No stats on provoked shark attacks :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209146173.jpg |
It would be interesting to see the data broken down in the above map to an "attacks/fatalities per mile of coastline".
|
also you need to break down CA by north/south. Most of the attacks here are north of SF. eg Tomales Bay is pretty sharky.
|
Prety cool site - again only unprovoked - I dont know why I think that is funny
