Anyone else move around when they were young?

Sorry guys my calculus prof is trying to kill us. Thought I would pose a question while I am sitting in class.

For those of you that moved around a lot during your developmental years (0-21) feel that it had a postive or negative impact on your life? I was born and raised half my life in New Jersey, 8 more years in Louisiana, and Now a year and a half in Texas. Its my belief that the these moves has had a profound impact on my life.

For one , I know that I would not be a petroleum engineering student if I would of lived my whole life in Jersey. One of my most vivid memories from the first move South was departing Newwark Int'l for Baton Rouge. I was in sweats and a heavy jacket. When we arrived in BR there wasn't even a terminal. Already a huge culture shock.

I am glad my parents did it. I got to see and experience some parts of the country first hand that I would of never done if I would of stayed in the North. Fishing for crawfish in the Achtafalya (spelled wrong) Swamp with some High School friends was a blast.

Anyone else move around a lot and think it was a great thing in the long run on your ethinic background?

I was born in Michigan, moved to Kansas City when I was 5, moved to Indianapolis when I was 9, moved to Kingsport, TN when I was 13 (1977). I've lived the south ever since. I think moving kids around when they're young is tough on the kids, but it does expose them to a lot of different environments and teaches them that change isn't always bad.

My 17-year old son, on the other hand, has never lived farther than 25 miles from where he was born. Pluses and minuses to both.

Edit: we weren't a military family - we had to "go where the food was" to paraphrase Sam Kinison...

67-76 CT 0-3rd grade
76-82 MN 4th grade to 9th
82-83 TX 10th grade
83-85 Western, MA 11-12
85-95 Boston (Brandeis then living)
95-97 Chicago
97-01 NYC
01-present Boston

If I ever have kids, I will never move them more than once, and only before first grade. that is if I don't sell them to get a flat screen TV.

I only saw big negatives after rebuilding my life from moving around:
Was supposed to skip 4th grade and go to 5th if we had stayed in CT. Lost Michelle Rhiebold AND Sue Cummings.

Was supposed to go to sports medicine training camp to be the assistant trainer for my HS (private Catholic) sports teams if we had stayed in MN. This had huge potential for laying the groundwork for my dream to be a surgeon. Lost Roseanne Silva.

Victoria, Texas was like living in a David Lynch movie for a year.

Worked 40 hour weeks in 11-12th grade (during the school year) to pay for college.

the only positive to come out of it is my ability to innovate, though I think that may be innate.

At age 14 I had attended 14 different schools.

There is definately pros and cons.
Pros are I became independent, tough, smart and able to adapt to change.
I really can't think of the cons? I was a happy kid.

As an adult I've had one basic career; development.
I've adapted that career to many different scenarios.
I've personally owned over 50 homes, of which about 15 I've lived in.
My family enjoys change, we do stuff for a while then move onto something else and we enjoy it.

FWIW, now get back to class and pay attention!
Knowing how to solve an equation with 25 invariables is deathly important!

K-12 in the same house and school district. It was very grounding and I am glad I did it that way. My best friends have been friends for a long time..
Otherwise, college in Hawaii, school and work in Japan. Have left a few times and worked around the country but always come back to NY. Family, country property, NYC - this is home for me. But I am getting the itch. I am planning for some changes..

Me and some other folks that moved around some came to the conclusion that where you graduated from high school was as good a place as any to call home. For me - Kingsport, TN. I'm about 1.5 hours away right now.

Stuttgart ( Nellingen Airfield)was one of my favorite assignments ever.
