A Pelican OT Fantasy Baseball League?
The F1 Fantasy feeler gave me an idea - why not a Pelican OT Fantasy Baseball league? There are plenty of serious baseball fans here - Dan in Pasadena, Porsche-O-Phile, pwd72s, dd74 - it could be fun.
I am a commissioner in two leagues, and I use Yahoo! Sports... basically, we do a draft, enter in the picks, and you accumulate stats during the season based on how your players do in real life. It would be easy (and free). What do you think?

Compared to football, how complicated/involved is it? I don't need another time bandit but I like the idea.

I do several teams per year on Yahoo. Normally just a public league so I'm in for yours. Send me an invitation.

Well, fantasy sports were invented by a bunch of guys sitting around in a rotisserie chicken restaurant talking about how to make a tabletop game out of the game they loved. Hence, Roto Baseball was born.
Fantasy baseball is only as easy or complex as you make it. You can set up your team once a week for the whole week (on the site it will tell you who is playing which day, so you can bench players on the Mondays and Thursdays when only about 1/4 of the teams play), or you can be obsessive (like me) and look at pitcher-to-hitter matchups, and how a particular hitter performs at a certain ballpark, or home-and-away, or daygame vs. nightgame or whatever. I've seen players come in the top 3 in their league by only checking up on their team once a week, and i've seen people come in the top 3 by being obsessive. Basically, a rotisserie league has a certain number of hitting stats that are tracked, and a certain number of pitching stats. The typical roto league is 5X5 (batting average, home runs, RBI, runs scored, stolen bases; wins, saves, strikeouts, ERA, and WHIP) but I like to do 6X6 because I think that walks are an unavoidably important aspect of the modern game, and a player's value certainly should include either walks, OBP, or SLG (I add a strikeout-to-walk ratio to the pitching categories to even things out). How you do in the league is governed by how the players perform in real life, but your teams points are relative to the rest of the league's performance. Say you have Albert Pujols as your starting 1st baseman. On a given night, he hits a 3-run HR, a single that drives in another run, walks twice, and strikes out once. Well, that's 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 1 Run, and an average (for him) of .800. A good night for Pujols. Now, say your entire team that night hits 4 HR... might look good by itself, but Team B has hit 5HR, and Team C has hit 6. If there are only three players in your league, that would mean that you get 1 point, A gets 2, and B gets 3... and you do this for every category, over the course of the entire season. Of course, Yahoo! figures all this out for you. The way I normally construct my teams are a 25-man roster, with one disabled list spot (in case, say, A-Rod gets hurt and you don't want to drop him, you can pick up someone like Miguel Cabrera while he heals). You have one of each position, at least 2 starting pitching spots, 2 relief pitching spots, 3 pitching spots that can be either, and then the rest are bench players that can be either pitchers or hitters. During a draft, you take turns picking players; with pelican, we can do a draft online (on Yahoo!) where we take turns and there is no time limit... so we can start drafting in late Feb or early March and not worry about getting it all done at once.

Oh, and btw each league has a max of 12 players (i think), so this one will be first-come-first-serve, although i would like to save spots for Dan in Pasadena, Porsche-O-Phile, dd74 and pwd (if they want to play)

Wow, from the immediate interest, it looks like we might need to create 2 leagues. But that's a good thing...

I'm in - did this before my son was born. He's now almost 12 and easily knows more ball players than I do.
Just let me know.

Steve - that must have taken a lot of work... were there even fantasy websites 12 years ago?!? In any case, Yahoo! does all the math for you now...

CJ - First a HUGE thank you for mentioning me and sending me the PM. I had not seen this thread...I've been busy recently, thanks for being a buddy.
I honestly know NOTHING about how rotisserie leagues work - your explanation above is about my sum total of knowledge - yeah,...how the hell is that possible for a baseball fan? Nevertheless, yeah, I'm in. It could be fun and a way of doing something pleasant with you guys instead of arguing about politics, etc. GAWD, I'm SICK of that! So, CJ...I assume you will be the Commish? Like I said, I know nothing...what is next to do? Is there money involved? Might make it fun if the winner gets a small amount, a tin of car wax, a Bentley manual or a T-Shirt? Whatever and I am fine if we want to do it just for the honor of a thread entitled, "2008 Season - CJFusco Knows More About Baseball Than Anyone in the Whole World!" ![]()

I'll get things set up once Yahoo! Sports starts up their Fantasy Baseball section, then I'll send you all invites.

We can have a small buy-in if you guys want, it might just be tough to figure out the logistics of it. Maybe the winner will just get a small prize from all the non-winners (except, maybe, the 2nd and 3rd place finisher)? Eh, we can figure it out later, we got time.

Quote:
We contracted with an outfit than handled all the stats. Start of the season was the toughest since we had to get them all the team info in order to get going. If I remember correctly, results were MAILED weekly. Wasn't until a few years into it that we were able to access the standings from a website. Yes, it was the dark ages. Looking forward to it.

Ok, Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball should be up within a couple days (I know the time for drafts are getting close because all the Fantasy magazines are now in stores... I personally prefer Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster yearly book, but Sporting News is a pretty good mag).
Since we will be doing an online draft over time, it might be best to start early (in case whosever turn it is doesn't have online access for a day or something). I think we will be able to do the draft right through Yahoo! - if not, can just use a thread on PPOT. But I think we can use Yahoo! I will let you all know. So far the league will be: CJFusco lendaddy wilke3169 BRPorsche gprsh924 steve911 Dan In Pasadena Porsche-O-Phile bivenator Looks like we will have 9 or 10 players, which means 2 or 3 more spots? Any more takers? First-come-first-serve...

I'd love to join if you have a spot. My league from last year has disbanded.
