Hints of Adam Carolla on the American "Top Gear"
I'm biased in that I think Adam Carolla is hysterical. In watching this, I was wondering if this is a glimpse of how the American Top Gear might be. If it is, I know that at least I will like it.
![]() Adam Carolla on Speed Channel's "Test Drive" - Pontiac G8 GT I'll also add... Anyone know if Tommy Kendall has been considered for American Top Gear?

Quite a bit short of "Top Gear" IMO. Lot better than, say "Motorweek" but, jeez, I hope it's better than this.
Why can't Discovery just carry "Top Gear" regularly again? That'd solve it. Nothing personal. ![]() |

The production is obviously low caliber on this specific clip, yes. I mean, it's Speed Channel.
![]() I'm just saying that I see in this clip how Adam Carolla might be on the higher production NBC version. BTW... they show Top Gear on BBC America. Check with your cable company about availability.

And I'm sure you're right, it would be better than that... |

That's a bummer. BBC America is part of basic cable here (the only cable I'll pay for).

Call the show something else. How can any US version compare to the BBC's Top Gear? And they will compare it if they share the same name. For example, who compares/confuses Motorweek, Pinks, Monster Garage, Tommy Kendall's drive around shows or any show with moving cars with the original Top Gear? I rest my case.
If they want to produce a US version, they'd better have an equivalent production budget, good writers, and quality and equally quirky presenters or they will suffer in comparison. Somehow I think they won't manage. Here's a name to consider: "JACSSTV" (Just Another Car Show from Speed TV". There, that's more understated, and if the show catches on, fine. Otherwise, we'll be looking for those Veyron vs a ???? segments that will never happen. And will they go as far as replicating their own "Stig"? If they do, it will demonstrate how derivative the US entertainment industry is. (Sorry. Couldn't manage to not end with a preposition). That ended up to be a mild rant. Sherwood |

Here we go... NBC is doing a version of BBC's Top Gear. The current working title of the show is "Gear." Adam Carolla is one of the revealed hosts of the show, one of the others being an automotive writer for the LA Times. It has big money backing. Adam Carolla has mentioned his involvement on his morning radio show.

Call the show something else. Even delete the word, "Gear" less audiences expect something somehow comparable. How can any US version compare to the BBC's Top Gear? And they will compare it if they share even part of the same name. For example, who compares/confuses any show with the original Top Gear? Actually, no one yet, but that's because NBC has yet to create a failed car show. I rest my case. If NBC wants to produce a US version, they'd better have an equivalent production budget, good writers, and quality and equally quirky presenters or they will suffer in comparison. Somehow I think they won't manage. Here's a name to consider: "JACSNBC" (Just Another Car Show from NBC". And since this is a major network producing this, I'm pretty sure they'll have a segment called, "Driving or Posing with the Stars" or equivalent with a panel of celebrity experts judging such things as color coordination, navigation and/or DVD screen dimensions, self-parking/driving features, wheel/tire diameter, leather trim country of origin, no. and size of sub-woofers and ingress/egress access for those wearing tight skirts.... and of course, the requisite 0-60 times. They'll also mention NASCAR at least 3x per episode. By all accounts, the show will be a ratings hit. That ended up to be a mild rant..... again. Sherwood |

Carolla has said on his radio show that his goal for Top Gear is to make it as close to the BBC version as possible. His feeling is that they have perfected the formula over there and he wants to bring it here.

OK, thanks. I heard the baby too. Also wondered why part of Adam's face was cropped off at times...
