Finally got the bike titled in my name and got a plate on it. I rode it nearly 40 miles to work this morning..... Yikes.... it is a crude harsh riding SOB.

A half hour later my butt and hands are still twingling. Definitely going to need a to put some better thin foam on the seat pan and will have to look into some gel palmed riding gloves vs my present leather gloves.

Also going to have to play with the jetting as it does not run too smoothly when accelerating at high rpm (from about 65 mph on up).

Got lots of looks once in town at stop lights.

I finally got mine torn down to the frame yesterday. It came apart quite smoothly. Yay, loose ball-bearing headset - glad I had a suspicion of that ahead of time.

Awesome Garrett! Bike looks relatively clean...should make for a solid build platform.

Last night I changed my sprocket gearing from the stock 15/35 to 17/35. I took it down the road and back last night and it feels much better suited to highway cruising now. 4th gear feels like the 5th gear and 65 mph in 5th produces much less vibration. It started raining so I did not get a chance to see if it has the balls to rev 5th gear out to over 100.... My guess is with my free flowing engine and lighter total bike weight, it will be about perfect gearing.

One of my first bikes was a 1970 CB450. I then traded it for a new 1971 CB750. Both are long gone. The buzzing in the butt is typical 2 cyl. .Yours looks to be a 71 or 72 as the front brake was downsized from the disc on the 750 to the later one on the 500 four. Either brake was much better than the early front drum. Ride can be much improved by replacing the original shocks with Koni or perhaps some other more modern make. Honda used stiff springs with weak shocks in 1970,s on the rear. The rear brake which is rod actuated was prone to lock and chatter on a panic stop .A conversion to cable operation improves it alot and makes it easy to relocate the pedal.

Jim,

You are really bringing back memories here. I had a 250 or 305 with those "washers" in the exhaust pipe when I was a kid. Really sounded great when they were turned streamlined!

Garrett,

Nice looking project. I have a couple of those sitting in my storage locker but they say BMW on the side. Just need to find the time and money.

Finally got around to adding some "better" foam on the seat..... It looks a bit better. The main pad is doubled up and is a bit chunky looking, but it is somewhat comfortable to ride now.

I ended up with smaller than stock main jets to get it to run right when wide open (does not make sense, but it is what it is). It will do 100 near redline in 4th, but 5th gear with the new sprocket is essentially "overdrive" now. I dropped my cruising rpm by over 1000 rpm which makes cruising at 65 mph much less "buzzy". I think it is going to make a fun occasional ride to work bike this summer and will probably get around 50 mpg.

Met my dad halfway at a nearby river town to cruise around on checking out the flood levels. We stopped at a local ice cream shop that was filled with other groups of bikers out enjoying the warm summer evening. We got swarmed by folks riding everything from Harleys to crotch rockets to GoldWings wanting details on Dad's '56 Cushman Eagle and my '74 CB450.

Dad was proud as a peacock as he made sure everyone listening knew his son built both of these bikes.

He put 70 miles on the Cushman earlier in the morning this day. Even though I try to get him to run it harder at 45-50 mph, he still typically cruises at 30. He has put about 1200 miles on it so far and keeps it waxed and covered. Note the towel under his bag on the luggage rack.... He does not want to scuff the luggage rack paint. He also puts a towel on the floor board temporarily when he kick starts it so the rubber pad on the kickstarter does not scuff the stainless steel floor board.
