It was this Gold's Gym mat that I was referring to. Never felt it myself but I hear it good. I doubt you would want blue foam exposed but it just occured to me how cool blue would look on a red bike for instance. Kind of Ferrari 250 GTO-like.

Oh yeah!! Tank stickered and cleared. Definitely has a bit of the 1974 Honda Elsinore look I was wanting for it.

Would look even nicer with a BCR fiberglass tank, but the challenge of DIY modding of an original steel tank and a DIY all metal seat pan was too much..... Anyone can just "buy" a finished tank. (I guess I am just a cheap SOB )

With your fabrication skills, you can afford to be cheap!

All kidding aside..... The BCR tanks are drop dead gorgeous and as far as cafe bikes go, I have yet to see any I like better whether homebuilt or store bought.

That is a beautifull job. Great detail in the modifications you made.

Someday in the far off future, I hope to restore one myself.

Yup, that is the build quality we've come to expect. Nice details. Knurled pegs, cool tank and seat, etc. Thanks for the update, Tim.

It is alive!

Runs OK, but I need to play with the jetting as soon as I get my mufflers built. Still need to finish the seat, install bar end LED turn signals and a tail/brake light.

321 stainless pipes are straight through at the moment, but I am building some stainless cans that will be packed with glass. I will drill a bunch of holes in my straight pipes and slide the cans over them. I might also build new header pipes out of the lightweight 321 stainless (.035" wall thickness), but for now the high temp painted stock header pipes will do.

Outstanding, Tim....why not keep the staright pipes?

Remember the old "Snuff-r-Not" straight pipe inserts? Amounted to a washer inside the end of the pipe that you could turn vertical/horizontal? Was the hot set up on old Honda 160 scramblers with dual straight pipes

Dayum I'm old

Finally got the mufflers built. It is still loud, but I think it is about right.

I made some flange fittings the hard way from a few chunks of solid 304 stainless. I drew them up on cad for the shop guys at work to make for me, but they were too busy to sneak them in, so I talked one of them at least milling a groove in each part with a CNC mill then I holed sawed out the center at home and used my old non CNC mill to hog off most of the excess on the outside. I then ID chucked them on my old lathe and turned them to size.

I then welded the flanges to my pipes then drilled a shietload of holes. Next I double wrapped them with some stainless steel mesh, then wrapped with fiberglass mat before sliding the cans over top. I still need to drill some more rivet holes to secure the cans, but I rode it down the road and back with a cleco holding the cans on. Sounds OK I guess.

Working on securing the seat pan today and might start on the bar end turn signals.

Howdy, I'm from over on the R1100S part of the forum.

My co-worker strolled over to my cubical last night and announced that he has a '69 CB450 that has been sitting garaged at his parent's house in Sacramento since '73.

And that if I help pay with pickup cost I can HAVE IT!

Looks like I found your project just in time but I don't have any hopes of duplicating your amazing fabrication. Purely inspiration and damn fine inspiration it is.

...and I for one like your politics too

Thanks! I have no desire to ever move again, but a recent trip convinced me that if I ever were to move it would be Arizona where Americans still value freedom.

The CB450's are are pretty anemic compard to modern bikes, but run nice and will keep up with highway traffic. I have briefly ran it up near 100mph, but the rpms are near redline at that speed. (after some more time on it, I might drop a few teeth on the rear sprocket)

I am still waiting on a title from my neighbor who gave me the bike (The title is locked in an old safe for 15 years which he has not been able to open). I will pester him again this winter about the title and get a plate and insurance on it this spring. Should be fun to ride to work on occasion and to take to some bike nights in town.

It is ready to go other than a license plate mount and a permanent seat pad (I stuck a couple temporary chunks of foam on it just for some short rides up and down our road).

A few pics.... almost finished!

I loved watching this project unfold. Great talent and skills. Thanks for sharing with us.

Very inspiring. You have ended up with a really worthwhile result. I hope you are enjoying the riding, and undoubtedly many complements that must coming your way.

Cheers Richard
PS. Sure hope the papers come thru OK
