Ha, you found me over there. Are you a member over there? After searching for awhile over there I found some nice work, but quite a few of the bikes over there are pretty crude....... it is cool however, that so many of those guys are launching into these projects with whatever they can. That is pretty much how I got started into building/restoring stuff. I think I actually enjoy the build more than actually riding/driving/flying the end result .

Spent a little time this weekend on narrowing up the tank in the knee area. I did it to my heavily bondo'd/cobbed spare tank that came with the parts bike in case I screw it up. I was able to retain the welded fittings, yet still narrow it up nicely, my knees fit perfectly now. As a bonus, having cut the sides off, I was able to get my dollies into the tank and hammer out the dents that had been bondo. Even though the metal was very thin, the carefully fitted new panels welded in nicely.

Wow, it has been awhile since I have worked on this project! I guess spring fever is hitting as I found some time last night and this morning to start working on the bike again. Trying to finish up any mods that might involve frame mods as I don't want to tear it apart for blasting/painting until I am confident I have it all figured out.

After changing my mind several times on how/where to cleanly mount the starter solenoid, voltage regulator and the battery, I finally made up my mind and simply found an out of the way spot that will hide the wiring under the seat while eliminating the stock heavy battery/electronics mount box. I will be using a smaller battery mounted by an aluminum strap down near the top of the swingarm.

I had a hard time deciding how to cover the gap between my new aluminum seat pan and the gas tank, but I finally decided to weld an aluminum piece to the pan which ultimately will have a thin foam/rubber pad attached to it..... I @#$@#$% hate welding thin aluminum!!!!! It turned out OK after a bunch of grinding/sanding.

Tim,

As usual, very nice work. Had to chuckle at your "spring is coming" comment! I just went out today and got the R1100RSL out from under the cover to get ready to ride tomorrow.

Fly safe!

Well for now I am going to run a stock sized battery and I decided to make a new lighter battery support out of .050" thick aluminum. I had to weld a small tapped lug to the frame tube to hold the front of the new support and simply drill a couple holes in the existing rear frame cross member for the rear. I slightly lowered the battery and had to dent the inner fender a bit to clear the support tray. Just for the hell of it, I weighed the new and the stock battery supports and the new one weighs .15 lbs while the stock one weighs 2.51 lbs. This new one will work initially but I may have to ****can it someday if I get a smaller battery that will fit down low near the top of the swingarm.

Just curious...why aren't you going with a "battery eliminator"?

I am not aware of one that works for this particular make/model of bike. I will use the bike to commute with at times, so the bike needs to stay somewhat reliable. If there is a something out there that works, I would be interested in hearing about it.

Time to make up my mind on how and where to mount the rearsets.

1/8" steel plates with tapered 3/8 id bosses look like they will be fairly strong and not too heavy.

Crap... with that done, I need to make up my mind whether to make aluminum levers or 4130 thin wall tubing pedals. I spend more time scratching my head than making parts.

Well some of them look ok.... I should have waited to finish weld them to the frame until I tear it all apart for blast and paint, but I got impatient and the welds are actually kind of sloppy in spots due to gap I was bridging. I am pretty sure the levers/pedals will hide it them though. Oddly enough, the factory Honda welds are pretty chunky on this bike however so I guess I need not worry about it. I can assure you Joe that my airplane fuselage welds are much nicer.
