Those utilty audit companies, any experience?

I had two recently approach me on my company electric bill claiming that many in our area have been misclassified and grossly overcharged. They say they'll research 4 years back and split it (the return)50/50 with us.

My scammysenses are tingling but they reference to companies down the road and the guy that actually stopped by seemed on the up and up.

Anyone know about this?

Anything on their web site about it? Call the general information line to see if it's legit? Did the guy have ID?

I'll check into that. My concern isn't really that they are an actual entity, but rather that they are scamming me on the 50% (perhaps I'm due an easy 1 call refund and they are hosing me). They don't get paid until I get a refund so there is no risk in that regard.

You have nothing to lose and much to gain IF ...they only collect on over-charges.
(No up-front fee).

They will need your signature to access your power company records/history.

If your business uses lots of power (electricity), such an 'audit' is not a bad thing.

Yea, that's my thought. But having two companies contact me inside 3 days seemed odd. Like there is an obvious refund and they are clamoring to get their 50% of the easy money I could get myself with a phone call. Or maybe already will be getting from a scheduled internal audit or something.

One call to your power supplier should confirm that possibility.

They may split 50/50 past overcharges (which you probably would not otherwise recover), but you will also reduce your bills for the future (assuming you get yourself reclassified correctly after the audit).

I think it's fair compensation for the service.

Try offering them 40%. No harm in trying to negotiate.

In private practice I actually represented a couple of companies that had been overcharged by the utility company. It is not all that rare.
