Why does my laptop keeping freezing up when I'm on Pelican?
 

It's IE that freezes and must be shut down and restarted. It doesn't just happen on the Grid Girls thread either. I have no problems on any other website, just Pelican. Any ideas?

Ditto. Happens to me also Laptop and Desktop both.

I had the same problems using IE and switched to Firefox - haven't had it freeze since.

For kicks I'm playing with Safari on XP. No issues so far. I'd stay away from IE...

FireFox blows, too. At least version 2.0 does. 3 should be awesome.

But, what you're likely experiencing is the way the page is coded coupled with the way the IE engine renders things. I think the way IE works is that it has to get done with one part before it renders another, so it could be waiting on an ad server, analytics server, or a bunch of other things.

You likely won't have the same problem in FF (I don't, and others have said that they don't) but the memory management on FF is crazy and it tends to use a lot more RAM, if that's a concern for you. For example, FF right now for me is taking up about 140MB.

Yikes. No wonder my computer is slow. FF and 540 RAM. I've known I needed a gig for 2 years, but....

Check out Opera. Much better than FF is just about every imaginable way.

Firefox is pretty good.

But I have to admit, on occassion, while logging onto Pelican it does freeze up. Does not happen on anything else but I can expect a Pelican Freeze about 1 in 20 times.

Using Firefox on a ThinkPad right now. Pelican can be a problem; first load of the day normally goes well, but after a while the refresh is crazy slow. Opening a new thread can take minutes.

Ad and analytics servers normally get redirected to 127.0.0.1 so I just chalked the slow updates up to server waits.

I have liked FF, but it is also becoming bloatware. I just want a simple and secure browser. No plug-ins, no BHOs, no active updates - just simple, safe and fast.

Actually for Windows, you could also use Lynx: http://www.vordweb.co.uk/standards/download_lynx.htm (edit: updated with better version for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, and Vista!)

If you're running Leopard (OS X) you can try Lynx in the Terminal App:

BTW, unless you are a Unix user (I'm not!) running Lynx in OS X Terminal app will not be fun after using a regular browser.

I wish I could load FF or any other browser. I just got my work to let me surf Pelican again. I don't want to screw anything up and then have to explain it to IT.

Corrupted cookies can cause many maladies. Try deleting cookies and temp internet files. You will have to remember your passwords next time.
