Not a good weekend for wrecks, but good for the drivers who walked away with minor injuries. Kovalainen's McLaren registered 26g as he hit the tire wall. He doesn't remeber it...

Had the second car been just a meter slower it would have taken the drivers head off... Both are very lucky!

What caused the car to fly off on a straight? Did something break?

On a right hand curve, the outer left tires take most of the stress. Lose the grip on the left front tire and the car is just not going to continue to turn.

I meant the first video. The car was going dead straight and then just shot off to its right. What the heck caused that? Did the driver sneeze?

I noticed that too. I would guess that was a suspension failure, like a wishbone breaking or something. The car just suddenly turned right while going down the straight. According to Planetlemans.com it was a 'failure under braking'... "The race continued with the Audi behind the number 8 Peugeot until almost one hour before race end disaster stroke as the Oreca number 5 of Stéphane Ortelli had a failure under braking at the first chicane and became airborne landing about 300 meters further after a horrific accident. A broken ankle for Ortelli as only consequence is the testimony to the safety of the tub, which had to endure an enormous amount of damage on its way to the guard rail where the tumbling finally came to a stop. A very important remark here as well is the attitude of Allan McNish whose car was missed by mere inches by the flying Oreca and immediately radioed his team to get the ambulances to the crash site. Hats off to the Scotsman for that swift decision and speed of reaction. Our best wishes for recovery for Stéphane Ortelli as well, the good news late Saturday evening about his state were a big relief for all of us at Monza."

You know the one that got me, is when you look at Heikki going into the wall, his out side rim fails, he is going to the wall, but he has the steering wheel in full lock to his right, but the right front tire doesn't turn at all.
Its almost like something besides the Rim failed there. You can see it best at 33 seconds into the film. in the still shot just before he hits the wall. |
