Voluntarily paying higher taxes
In this political season, we hear a lot of wealthy Democrats pleading that the government increase the income tax rate(s) of the wealthiest Americans to what they were during the 1990s.
If McCain wins and that doesn't happen, I propose that the government set up a program where these wealthy Democrats (and anybody else) can voluntarily pay the higher taxes. In turn, they can receive a plaque or a license plate frame, or something that will allow them to display their status as a hard-core Democrat. This would replace people driving around for years with Gore or Kerry bumper stickers on their cars. Do you think people would voluntarily pay the higher taxes? Or do they rely on the compulsion of the government to do what they feel is the right thing? |

It's a great idea. They already festoon their little hybrids with bumper stickers that proudly displaying that they are kinder, more thoughtful and sensitive than everybody else. Why not a special plate that screams to the world that they are more generous, too?
Where I live they would be in an absolute frenzy to get their special plates. I'm serious.

Actually, I think those in the Hollywood crowd who promised to leave the country if Bush were elected are more likely to do so if Obama is elected and raises their taxes. Monaco sounds good.

I wouldn't rule out voluntarily paying more, but not unless I knew what it would be spent on. I would like to contribute to things like the Space Program, etc. but I certainly wouldn't throw it
into the black hole of spending with no accountability now.

Hehehe. We've been watching Al Franken locally for a while. Not ready for prime time, I'd say. Turns out he didn't pay taxes on a lot of appearances he made out of state. He's paying $70,000 in back taxes. Plus he got fined for not having work comp insurance on either his company or his campaign, I forgot which. He maintains he didn't intentionally avoid paying his taxes. Yeah, right, he accidentally didn't write the checks.

In VA hybrids DO get special license plates that allows them in the carpool lanes with fewer than the min. required number of occupants. It completely defeats the purpose of carpool lanes. And better yet, I believe they get a sales tax and registration fee exemption. So those folks, who are likely to want higher taxes for us all, actually pay less taxes themselves.

the year that JOhn KErry ran for the potus he paid something less than 10% of his worth in tax.
I'm starting to warm up to the idea of a flat tax

Even trying to find out how much his wife paid in taxes is an excercise. A flat tax would be wonderful and end a lot of these games.
