If anyone out there is so stupid as to buy a used helmet, why not spare yourself the trouble and expense of crashing your motorcycle in order to find out if it's junk or not and just bash your own skull in with a sledgehammer instead. Easier, cheaper, simpler.

Anyone who buys/rides a used helmet is an absolute idiot. I have no, zip, zero respect for them.

Got a "cheap/discount" brain? Fine. Use a "cheap/discount" helmet then. A used helmet is worse. How do you know if it's ever been crashed or the protective material has been compromised? You don't. Until you crash and end up a vegetable.

Well then call me stupid Jeff

I have bought used helmets and am comfortable with a solid visual inspection that includes removing the interior lining and using eyes and fingers to look for signs of damage. Any sort of ding or damge gets a pass. Lots of guys out there have collections of helmets, like Tabs and his spoons, and they occasionally sell off to fund more helmets. I bought a RX-7 (Colin Edwards scheme) that was hardly worn for $250 that would have cost easily $600 in the store.

WOW,

I Know this because I am the original purchaser, also I do agree with some of what you say, some, there is a lot of new helmets on the market, that even new in a box, could never hold up to an ARAI, or SHOEI.
Also in any case no matter what you are wearing, new or used,if you are hit you are gonna get F(*&%^ up.

anyway porsche-o-phile does this mean your'e interested? or did you just have a bad day.
hope you feel better

Nice Nakano lid Wolverine

I have a pair of high end Arais that I bought used, they were just about unworn. Great deals and would buy used in that condition again for sure. I have also sold lids I bought new to guys who knew they were getting a mint lid for a good price. I should have kept my Joey Dunlop rep though.

D@mn Jeff, I guess I am an idiot in your eyes as I have at least one used helmet. High end stuff is nice, but if it says DOT and Snell approved, I am fine with it. For those who might flame me for this....go right ahead, I have ridden for nearly all my 41 yrs and you won't change my mind.

Go easy fellas. Sometimes POP's medications don't have the desired effect on him.

Wasn't there a rather large debate on the actual safety of a SNELL (expensive) rated helmet vs. a DOT (cheaper) where a magazine found that the softer DOT only helmets transmitted less g-force to the head? That said I was always an Arai head.

Motorcyclist magazine wrote an article a few years back. Believe it was titled "Blowing the Lid Off." You should be able to still find it on their website.

They rated the cheapo ($80?) Z1R Strike as the safest helmet, per their battery of lab tests. Admittedly, they didn't test the top-of-line helmets. Mainly because they required the manufacturers to send in helmets for testing. I don't think Arai and Shoei participated. I don't think Suomy did, either. But of the helmets tested, the Z1R helmet scored safest. The argument was that SNELL certification is intended for racetrack application, to protect from super high G-load hits. On the street, that's less likely. So softer foam/EPS padding (which would be found in DOT certification, for example) is actually more protective. At least that's the hypothesis. Whether that translates into real-world protection was beyond the scope of the study, admittedly.

I tried one on, once, in a store. Thought it kind of fit like a Shoei RF1000.

There are at least 2 online companies that have the Z1R helmet on sale, right now. $55 from Motostrano? Or was that Motorcycle Superstore? I got the email ad this past week and deleted it. Newenough (?) might also have it on sale for about $60. Can't recall the exact retailers, but that's the short list of websites to check, if anyone's interested.

I think Snell is finally seeing the light and revising their standards.

Good article about the Z1R (here's some related links):

http://www.webbikeworld.com/z1r-helmets/z1r-zrp-1.htm
http://www.motostrano.com/z1rzrsohe.html

Original article:

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html

If this is true and the Z1R is that good (and I'm looking for some more studies to back that up/convince me) then it's all the more reason to (1) never buy used and (2) buy a new helmet every 3-4 years. EPS foam starts to break down over time, so time is an enemy as much as "unknown condition" of anything used.

I still maintain that using a used helmet is one of the absolute stupidest things someone can do. Probably better than no helmet at all, but only marginally so. My intention is not to undercut this guy's sales attempt here, but let's be serious - a used helmet? Are you kidding?

Helmets are not the place to skimp or try to "get a deal". I firmly believe this. But it's your brain, your choice.

Personally I'd never buy a used helmet, if they get dropped from waste height just once onto hard ground, you might as well toss em.
