I'd say your fuel gauge is defective.

On a '72S, less than 40 miles. Only happened once...I wanted to use ALL of the fuel system cleaner additive. I did...hitching a ride to a station, paying $10 for a cheap plastic gas can, plus the gas. (edit) Left Cindy with the car...she really had to "go" by the time I got back. Never again.

Don't know how long (miles-wise) I went with the light on in the 911. But it died just across a large intersection from the gas station. Freakin' traffic light at the intersection just HAD to turn red on me. Man, I knew I was in trouble when I saw the light turn yellow as I was approaching the intersection. Just a little too far to gas it and make the light. So I coasted to the side of the road, like I was going to make a right turn and turned on the hazards. I waited until the traffic light changed back to green, and (thank god for the fuel accumulator), restarted the motor, slid into a hole in traffic, and zipped across the intersection right into the gas station. Phew.

Furthest I've ever knowingly gone with the light on has been about 90 miles. That was in my Nissan daily driver. The light would come on with just over 3 gallons left. On the highway, that was an easy 90 miles.

This thread reminders me of a Ron White comedy skit.
Setup, conversation between two passengers on a twin engine place & one of the engines stops:

Paraphrasing....

Passenger 1: Oh My God! How far can this plain fly with just one engine?!?
Passenger 2: All the way to the scene of the crash.

Or the punch line to a classic joke:

"If we lose that fourth engine, we'll be up here all night."

Best,

My mazda minivan - the light comes on when you have 20 miles left at current fuel consumption rates.

My Altima - light comes on about 5 minutes before you are out of gas.

On my 356, flipping to the reserve tank gives me an extra gallon - or about 25 miles.

My 2007 tundra has a 26 gallon tank and the gas warning light comes on with 6 gallons left.
I just watch the trip meter and fill up when I get close to 400 miles.

We had a Jetta that used to run out of gas pretty much the same minute the light came on - if it came on at all. That fscking car. Ran it out of gas at least a dozen times.
