Those wacky Chinese!

But with China now being a bigger market than the US for new cars, some strange things are happening.

Who knew that Buick was a hugely popular brand in China? Apparently the Chinese ideogram for Buick means something like "velvet pussy" in Chinese. So I've been told.

And Porsche expects to double the number of its dealerships in China next year.

And wait till the cheap Chinese domestic brands start appearing in the US. I read somewhere that Wal-Mart will be retailing one or more Chinese brand name cars.

Fun times...

Ah, the Chinese, such an ancient culture, such wisdom and ingenuity. Considering the amount of rice they eat why couldn't come up with anything better than a pair of stick with which to eat it?

Harry do you get the little drop down bar from windows that tells you something has been blocked? ActiveX, and flash up to date? Got any type of firewall other than the regular windows?

Control Panel -> Internet Options -> click the security tab and set to medium...

Sidney,

I hate computers!!! I used to understand how to make them do what I want (started with assembly language on an IBM 1620, mainframes at college, DOS etc at work) but now I seem to be reduced to rebooting and hoping the problem goes away.

In response to your questions:

* No drop down bar at top.

* ActiveX and flash up to date? Dunno, how do you tell?

* No firewall except what comes in windoze.

* I tried setting security to medium but no dice.

any help is appreciated.

Hi Harry, as much as Sidney and Denis were joking, they are right. It seems that IE8 updated some security settings and Adobe did not. A lot of people are having this issue. There are many different ideas on how to fix this and some are having luck with one idea, while others are not.

Since what Sidney suggested did not work, you may want to try and uninstall the Adobe Flash player from XP and then go to Adobe and install it again. To uninstall, goto Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and look for Adobe Flash Player. There may be multiple Flash programs installed. Uninstall all.

You can go to this link and it will tell you your version...
Version Test for Adobe Flash Player

Latest should be V10.x

Your best bet is really to download Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Safari.... IE is too far integrated into the Microsoft OS and does cause these problems.

Dave

Addendum: I just ran IE8 on Windows 7 and there was no problem. I have two Flash programs installed, both seem to be the latest. Both are version 10, but I think they are slightly out of date. Adobe wants me to upgrade.
