Who's been to Sedona?

I'm taking tomorrow off to head up there, as I've heard it's a real zoo on weekends. Wife and I will take the 330i, so we need to keep this on pavement. What should we not miss?

Rick,

You're right, it is a zoo on the weekends. Weekdays are much better. Check out Tlaquepaque (spelling?) very cool for shopping and just strolling around. After you drive through the main part of town head up HWY 89A towards Flagstaff. This will take you up Oak Creek Canyon - Gorgeous! Unless you want to head all the way to Flag, just pull over at the lookout at the top of the climb.

If you have time head back south towards Jerome. This is a must see. It is a great road over Mingus Mountain towards Prescott but that will take a lot more time. Last time I was on this road (I lived in Prescott for many years) the road was kinda rough. Head up to Jerome and then head back towards I-17 on HWY 269.
This can all be done in a day, start early...

Have fun!

The helicopter ride. Breathtaking.

If you stop in Jerome, try the bruschetta. Best in the world.

double thumbs up on Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, and Jerome. pause and look at the old indian dwellings and parks.

Way cool indian sand art too........Chief Yellow horse is a main "chain" of road side stands.....barter with them, lots to choose from.........thanks for the flashback and memories.....nice drive!

Even though they look funny, the Pink Jeep tours are great. They have access to lands the other tours don't.

I'm saving the helicopter trip for the Grand Canyon for wifey's b-day. I just want to see the best there is to see in Sedona on paved roads. I'll take the bike up there solo some other time.

Rick,

Here's an old thread on Sedona. No matter what your religous leanings, the Chapel of the Holy Cross (see thread) is really cool.

Ron... here's the cactus!

Love it, although it's been too long.

Many years ago (okay, 1999) when we moved out here to Kalifornia, we passed through Sedona on the way to Phoenix and the west coast. Spent a couple days there camping and stuff. It gets HOT (camping in Arizona in the summer - no kiddin' right?) But it's a breathtaking place.

I didn't need no "Pink Jeep" tours - we sort of accidentally stumbled upon an off-road route down the elevation change called "Old Snebley Road" which years ago used to be the only way into and out of Sedona. It's beaten up badly now with lots of ruts, divots, etc. but absolutely sublime. Great drive, great views, simply breathtaking in places. But you damn well better have 4WD and high ground clearance. Getting close to the bottom we saw those Pink Jeeps going up (apparently the lower portion of that road is part of their route) packed full of tourists looking at us like we were absolutely nuts. Heh heh heh. We just passed 'em and kept right on rolling along like it was no big deal. Fun times.

A few years ago I stopped there with a friend in a rented Piper Seminole to get gas/lunch whilst flying back from a "time building" trip to Dallas. Very fun/exciting airport to fly in and out of. Absolute blast. I don't think I've ever flown into anywhere else where I swear I was literally dodging pillars of rock on my downwind leg. Oh, and it gets windy.

The mountain biking opportunities there are great. I found an old "pioneer era" graveyard while out biking (no joke) with sun-bleached headstones from the 1800s. Looks like it had been forgotten for many, many years. Pretty surreal - I bet I was the only one to have seen it in years. Kinda' put my "trip out west" in perspective. Makes one appreciate modern vehicles and interstate travel. I don't know the story of the two folks buried in that old graveyard, but I imagine they were "headed west" back when it was difficult, challenging and dangerous and that they didn't make it. Who knows - pretty interesting place though.

Mrs. Z-man and I went back in February - and the recoomendations are spot on:

- Oak Creek Canyon
- Temple of the Holy Cross
- Pink Jeep - Broken Arrow tour (amazing fun!)
- Jerome

I'd also reocmmend:
- The V-bar-V ranch - a small site with some very old petrographs.
- Montezuma's Castle & Well
- There are lots of hiking trails around the Red Rocks -- the trails around Red Rock Crossing are easy and the beauty is spectacular.

to reside in sedona you need the following:

1) $$$$
2) own a lot of cats.
3) own a funk mobile
4) grateful dead sticker on funk mobile
5) birkenstocks
6) crystals lots of big ones
7) all rocks on property arranged in mystery symbols and piled on top of one another.
8) lots of ******* TOFU
9) hairy armpits on chicks
10) coffee table book "guide to santa fe"!

the only reason i like to go to oak creek is for the fishing! 30 years ago it was cool. now its an overcrowded magnet for ******* crystal chanting morons!

- For lunch/dinner Dal and DiLuca (the one in town not the one by the Hilton)
- What out, most of the land is native american/indian grounds, be careful if hiking by yourself, plenty of 'sacred ground'
