My New Toy, New 'Hobby' with benefits to the Pelican Crowd!

What to do with my 'ecomonic stimulus' check...hmm.

I have been messing around with oil analysis for years now but never really did it myself, rather just examined the results and tried to conclude what was going on. It wasn't till I spent time with a world expert in wear debris analysis that I really started to undertand the power of particle analysis.

So I went on Ebay and bought a microscope (40-1600X) with a digital camera to hook up to my laptop.

We have an R&D facility that could do more of this but they are pretty busy with all the OEM specifications and product development so to ask them to put together a data base on the emergining wear particles on oil cooled engines would be asking alot. So I figuered I would do it.

My offer: If anyone want to engage in a really cool study of your engine let me know. I only have a few requirements.
1) You have to commit to pulling oil samples
2) You have to allow me the rights to publish the data
3) I am not liable for any failure that may occur. The data I will present to you is just observations of what is actually in your engine oil. No inferences will be made on the reliability or longevity of your engine.

Here is what you will receive:
1) Complete oil analysis including elemental analysis, oil condition and viscosity from Staveley Services CTC analytical (this I have to charge at cost, $10/sample)
2) Partical analysis (morphology and elemental constitution) - free
3) A place in tribological history - priceless

If you do not want to pony up the $10 for the Stavelely Services analysis, I will still do the particle analysis at no charge.

Let me know if any of you rascles wants to participate?

Here is my scope and a pic of my scale slide to 1 micron.

MRM, thats funny. Actually I do keep a pretty tidy place - garage, cars, house, desk but today I am working on a rather big performance assessment so the analytical side of the desk is neat (as it should be) and the creative side of the desk is a jumble of filtered maheim. Notice the growing p-car matchbox collection...

Mike, just to clarify, this is for oil (air) cooled engines only? I'm looking to have my oil samples tested to make sure I'm not getting any vegetable oil contamination in my lube oil

Pretty generous to do the oil analysis, but I can't believe that you aren't going to guarantee my engine is going to go 100,000 miles if the oil checks out fine. That's just not fair.

We use that all the time with aircraft oil samples. Sure is nice to know more of whats going on inside the engine.

Not just air cooled. I can look at anything you send in (just not pearl jam!). To test for veg oil contamination I will have to run it through an FTIR and I will also need a baseline sample of the oil as well as the veg to compare spectra. PM me and we can set something up.

Wish you had posted this last week, before I had gone ahead and done oil changes on the car and motorcycle (and mixed all the old stuff together with some other used oil I had sitting around). Otherwise, I'd be in.
