Facts to ponder-

I'm probably a bit more vocal online that I should be. I should probably be more discrete about what I do for a living. I fly airplanes for a major overnight package delivery company.

"When it absolutely positively has to be there the next day...."

Yet, I just can't keep my mouth shut. That and I have a terrible temper; it has gotten me in trouble before [I'm banned on Rennlist, something I'm proud of~]

Yet I do think that my views on guns need to be advanced. I own several guns, including a Smith & Wesson handgun chambered in .40 S&W, and a MAK-90 semi-automatic assault rifle. The MAK-90 is a Chinese AK-47. The only difference is that one part of my MAK has a metal ridge at the end that prevents it firing like a machine gun. Grind the ridge away and it is fully automatic. I have no intention of doing such- I've fired fully automatic weapons, and I didn't thing much of them. The gun was jumping around so much that I thought it was ridiculous. Yes, you can tear a deer in two with an AK-47. Why would you want to? One shot provides a lot more venison sausage~

I've lived with guns since 1968. Yes, 1968: In that year my dad took me in the back yard and put a single-cock Daisy bb gun in my hands. I was probably about 3 feet tall, considering that I was TWO years old!

I've never been afraid of guns. I've ALWAS had a huge respect for guns! When I was 5 years old and my dad held me in his arms and explained that we were about to shoot the MONSTROUS...

".22"

I was really really scared! Dad held me , I aimed the huge gun... and then I pulled the trigger. There was a little "pow", as the .22 long rifle shell discharged.

You see, dad made a BIG point about all the guns. THESE are serious machines according to dad. I knew how to handle a gun when I was 5 years old.

What is odd about this? I grew up in Temperance, Michigan; nearly ALL the kids in my high school attended the "Hunter Safety" class that was offered in the junior high school. And it was a waste of time for nearly all of us! We all knew how to handle firearms.

N!

FACTS TO PONDER:
(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
(C) Accidental deaths per physician
is 0.171.
Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of
Health Human Services.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Now think about this:
Guns:
(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S.
is
80,000,000.
(Yes, that's 80 million..)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths
per year, all age groups, is
1,500.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(C) The number of accidental deaths
per gun owner is
.000188.
Statistics courtesy of FBI
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.'
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN,
BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Please alert your friends
to this alarming threat.
We must ban doctors
before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Out of concern for the public at large,
I have withheld the statistics on
lawyers for fear the shock would cause
people to panic and seek medical attention.

I agree. A hospital room screw-up killed my 46 year old father 20 years ago. Not one person in my family, immediate or extended has been killed with a gun.

While I am a supporter of folks having guns (I have one myself), gun safety education and CCW laws, I think the guns to physicians analogy is not valid.

Guns are not tools used when a person is sick or in critical physical condition, doctors are. Doctors are frequently present in the space between life and death. Doctors cannot typically be blamed for the lives they didn't save, IMO. And the analogy ignores the lives saved by doctors, lives which would have ended without the help of a doctor.

Perhaps if one could isolate the incidents when a doctor's inaction or erroneous actions caused a death, one might have a bit better analogy. But, it still doesn't seem to work.

It's apples and oranges, IMO.

A few points to ponder, the Dept of Health Human Services does not have stats on accidental deaths caused by physicians. Nor does the CDC. The CDC on the other hand does track all unintentional deaths and came up with 120,462. Are you saying that all accidental deaths are caused by doctors? Are physicians responsible for all the 45,343 unintentional motor vehicle deaths as well? These statistics don't make sense. Though on the other side the CDC also reports only 789 accidental deaths by firearms.

Anyways, just thought I'd point that out.

If I remember correctly the number was 80,000 per year caused by physicians. I'll look it up.

quick google search and top 3 say 120,000.
Damn, thats more than it was 20 years ago. You would think they were getting better.
Maybe just too many doctors.
Or as I always say " there are more old drunks than old doctors". Maybe after all these years alcohol will finally get the respect it deserves.

Unfortunately, facts are not a part of that little "sound-bite" type baloney: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr56/nvsr56_10.pdf

"In 2005, a total of 33,541 persons died of drug-induced causes in the United States (Tables 21 and 22). The category ‘‘drug-induced causes’’ includes not only deaths from dependent and nondependent use of either legal or illegal drugs, but also includes poisoning from medically prescribed and other drugs."

Unintentional deaths (118K all injury) can be found in Table 18 and include:

Why limit it to accidental?

How about "on purpose" deaths per year caused by physicians v. "on purpose" gun deaths?

Lets talk to Money Guy about MD's.

In LV there were several Endoscopy clinics that were using contaminated equipment which has caused them to send out 12,000 letters to their clients stating that they are at risk for Hepatitis and HIV.

His posted statistic was 'accidental deaths caused by doctors'.

So IMO, it's relevant...and the solution is obvious to any liberal.

almost everybody, sooner or later, goes to see a doctor.

not only that, when they do they are likely to be sick.

i loves me some guns (see screen name) but this isn't a reasonable comparison.

if we handed out firearms to everyone when they walked into a dr.s office i'll be gun related deaths would start to compete w/ the docs #'s.
