Pie

Just had a big piece of the best damn cherry pie I ever tasted. Mom has that crust thing pretty much figured out. How about favorite pie quiz? Never went for cake or candy much, but pie, that is a different story. Did not think a poll would work. My favorite is anything but mincemeat, I'm serial.

Reason they even have cherries at all is because Dad planted a couple of sticks he brought back in a golf bag from Nebraska when he was visiting his brother. Three years later he has three 15 foot tall cherry trees loaded with fruit. Apparently if you hang various shiny mylar strips in your trees, it makes birds think the thing is on fire, so they leave the cherries alone.

Criminal that they cut down those orchards and hop fields and built houses in my parents neighborhood. It is the best soil I have ever seen for growing stuff, peaches as big as your freakin' head.

key lime pie.

Cherry with Blueberry a close second.

Unfortunately most of Calis orchards are losing out to development. I still remember what little orchards were left in the San Jose area 25 yrs ago. Most of those are long gone now.

Are they in Sacto, too? A lot of that town is 10 foot deep river bottom topsoil. Amazing stuff. I was always amazed by the peaches got when I lived in Davis.

yeah, a lot of the stuff along the American River is deeper than that. When they put in their swimming pool, it was that rich, black soil all the way down.

I can tell you, the topsoil in Davis is about like what I have in Carmichael. We planted peach trees about the same time at the folks house, and in my yard. In 4 years mine is 7 ft tall with a trunk like my wrist, Dad's is closer to 20 ft tall and the trunk is like my calf. The cherry trees are just freaky though. Literally sticks no bigger than your finger and fit inside a golf bag and the biggest one is higher than the peak of the house in three years.

But I digress, they have a Key Lime Tree too, mmm, key lime pie.

Mom made a peach strawberry rhubarb one time when she was cleaning out the fridge, that was pretty good. Apparently the key is to keep your Crisco in the fridge, use cold water and handle the crust for the dough as little as possible.

Cold water and tossed together lightly with a fork is essential.
Instead of the crisco, I let the dough sit in the fridge overnight before rolling it out. Lets all the glutens absorb nicely. Makes the crust light and flaky. I bake mean assed fruit pies. Taught by three gens of midwest farmers daughters.

Banana cream! Followed closely by pumpkin. Both topped with lots of whipped cream (not Kool Whip).

Cherry. Heated but no ice cream. lemon Meringue (sic?) a close second but only if very fresh. Yummy.

I make a Lemon Meringue pie that is to die for. Almost none of you have ever had a good one but if you have, then you know what I mean. Tishabet has apparently had a good one. And just so you know, if the pie filling is creamy-looking and the pie stands up on the plate, it's not a good one. The filling should be yellow/clear, and the pie should fall.

....a very close second for me.

Chocolate banana cream with graham cracker crust just barely tops it.

kach22i 05-20-2008 08:57 AM

My aunt just made the best Rhubarb pie I have ever had.

you mean sexist pig

Best lemon pie to me is this lemon chiffon one Mom does, got the recipe from Dad's sister Katie. Imagine if you took the mirangue(sp?) and mixed it with the clear yellow custard stuff Supes refers to), light, fantastic really.

How about pumpkin pecan, sort of like a hybrid between the two, better than pumpkin, better than pecan(which is saying something, because good pecan pie is tough to beat)

I remember the first time I had strawberry rhubarb pie, yeah baby, grew the rhubarb just for the pie. The tartnes of the rhubarb complements the sweetness of the strawberry, they just go together. Sort of like chocolate and good red wine.
