Cheap LASIK surgery
In the Penny Saver, there is a coupon for cheap LASIK surgery. Price matching and refer a friend for an even bigger discount. I dunno about you but that doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather pay big bucks for a problem free procedure than get a run-of-the-mill twofer by a hack.
I went to a Home and Garden Show recently to look for a landscape designer and contractor. A LASIK surgery clinic had a booth there and was passing out coupons right next to a popcorn ceiling scraper contractor demonstrating his technique. WTF? No wonder we are starting to hear more problems with corrective vision surgery lately. |

When my wife opted to do this, she went to her optometrist and consulted with him about it.
We ended up driving 60 miles away past probably dozens of other eye centers to go to a renowned one in Delray Beach. It was not cheap either. You would have to be out of your mind to go to a discount joint. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for and in some instances I am willing to accept this, this was not one of those instances.

While the FAA says I must use corrective lenses while flying, the DMV lats me drive without.
My eyes aren't bad enough to consider any surgical procedure. They may have a 99% success rate, but the last 99 probably came out fine. Not worth the risk. I just keep an old pair of glasses in the airplane. |

Ditto FWIW my daughter just got Lasik and the bill was $4900. She was VERY nearsighted and now can see perfect.... still, it is pretty scary to think about taking the risk.

I have read that the learning curve on a lot of operations is very high and that you don't want to use a doctor who has done less than a certain number for some difficult procedures. My wife was consulting with doctors about a possible thyroid condition and she was told that is she needed surgery she should use someone who had done something like a thousand of that type. I suspect that eye surgery is the same. I am very nearsighted and have been hearing about good progess in dealing with people in my situation. I figure I'll give it another five years for the technology to get settled, I'll be in my mid-40s and my eyes should be reasonably stable, and I'll ask my regular eye doc for some suggestions. I'll pick the one with the most experience doing my type of eye and the best track record. Correcting people with 20/40 and no astigmatism to 20/20 is probably cheap and easy. A coupon probably works for them. Going from 20/100 and astigmatism to 20/20 doesn't sound like the same thing.

My wife was legally blind, if she had no contacts in she could not see my face at 15 feet just that I was a blur standing there. I want to say she was 20/400 or 20/500 her contacts were -8's or -9's, its been a while.
At first her vision was 20/15 but it settled down to 20/25 in one eye and 20/30. She cried after the surgery she was so happy. Worth every penny and it was about $5,000.

I just had the PRK, and am very pleased with it, not cheap, but worth every penny
![]() ![]() I was also lucky, a buddy is a partner in the clinic who did mine, and even though he doesn't do that surgery, I knew he wouldn't lead me wrong, as, like many others, he relies on me to find parts for his Porsches ![]()
