Appearently, it has carressed the a$$ of Sharon Stone.

It still ain't worth THAT much!

http://english.pravda.ru/news/society/23-05-2008/105318-madonna-0

"The "Basic Instinct" star also sold off her red 1976 vintage Porsche 911 Targa - which she restored to its original luster after it was stolen and recovered. It sold for EUR 500,000 (US$786,000)."

Another liberal circle jerk. While I would love to spend some time with Ms Stone, the rest of them can stay in Cannes....

If it came with Sharon Stone it's still over priced!

What, there are no more hospitals in Africa that need building?

What an utterly monumental waste of money.

It was sold as part of a benefit - along with Madonna's purse, et al and raised $10M for amfAR - American foundation for AIDS research.

I'm sorry, I don't understand the vitrol. While you may not like AIDS, or the celebs, it's raising money for a charity, isn't that worthwhile at some level?

Since you asked: Considering how little of donated money actually makes it to the end user, no, i don't really see it as useful.

Sadly, if the mass of stories that get reported about charities are true, most charity is largely a scam too. Just like most other businesses, they are out to line their pockets. Really, if it's just for charity, why not bid on a pet rock? For that matter, why bid at all? Just donate the money instead.

I was at the drive through at McDonalds the other day. There was a sign about "buy three cookies and a portion goes to some charity." I am always suspicious when it says a portion.
Since I was at the drive through I had time to read the fine print.
10c of every dollar.

That's actually a pretty good amount considering you're also getting a burger.

Some of the statistics from charitable disbursement amounts vs actual donations that came out after 9-11 and Katrina were pretty amazing. In many cases only pennies on the donated dollar actually goes to your cause of choice.

WTF. You are an expert in charities too?

It must be sad to be this pessimistic about life. While I agree that there are certainly charities that do a poor job, for you to put "most" of them under the broad brush as a scam seems really sad to me.

FWIW, amfAR according to the Charity Navigator, has a fundraising efficiency of $0.14; it takes 14 cents to raise a dollar that goes to charity. With an 8% administrative cost, over 76% of the money raised goes to the charity/program. According to charity navigator:

Quote:
Our data shows that 7 out of 10 charities we've evaluated spend at least 75% of their budget on the programs and services they exist to provide. And 9 out of 10 spend at least 65%.
Is this the best/most efficient charitable organization out there? No. It's certainly not as efficient as the National Military Family Association but a whole lot better than DAV.

So 10% are bad fish, as opposed to "most" as you indicate. All of this is public information since charitable organizations have to report their financials to keep their tax exempt status.

As to why they don't bid on a pet rock? First of all, truly blessed individuals tend to give away money to causes they believe in. Charitable events help to draw attention to the charity, and utilize star power, guilt, whatever to increase the reach of donations. People then donate items to be bid on, so the cost of the item is zero to the charity.

Anyway, did someone kick you or put you into a dark closet as a child? Your negative attitude is really rubbing me the wrong way.

I don't know what's up with OT. I'd say that 99% of us have it infinitely better than the rest of the world living in a hut, wondering where our next meal is coming from. You have a computer and an internet connection, that brings you pretty far up Mazlow's hierarchy in my book. Seems you'd have more to be thankful for than the negative attitude on life you are sharing with us.

Hummm, I wonder how much a dildo owned by Sharon Stone would sell for...probably $770,000, ie the price paid for the Targa minus $16k, the price of a very nice '76 Targa that did not see her butt .

You know that beautifully polished ,fragrant, round, wood, stick shift knob is the only reason the car was purchased.

I wonder if the purchaser even bothered to take delivery? I hope this sets a precedent for the value of old 911's...

Yeah here it is from F1.com

The show got a rapturous reception and afterwards designer Petra Ecclestone received a huge bouquet from Button - and the obligatory peck on the cheeks - along with a standing ovation. Among those singing her praises was sister Tamara, who along with Steve Ryder from British F1 broadcasters ITV, was the presenter for the evening. The FORM menswear was followed by female beachwear, with the Elizabeth Hurley collection combining perfectly with Jimmy Choo shoes - the 12 centimetre-plus heels made the models larger than life. And as Monte Carlo is a city of diamonds, Chopard presented its new collection.

The finale of the evening was the charity auction, with five lots of unique character. Elton John donated an invitation to his 2009 Oscar night reception - this year it was attended by the likes of Harrison Ford, Sharon Stone, George Clooney - including return business class flights from London and accommodation for two in Los Angeles. A lucky bidder got that treat for 46.000 Euro. The second item on the shelf was a Chopard unisex watch from Elton John’s collection, and Vijay Mallya won that for 100.000 Euro. The 1974 vintage Corvette from the personal collection of Sharon Stone saw a fierce battle - Kimi Raikkonen left the field victorious, the price tag a cool 200.000 Euro.

Then there was the luxury week onboard the Indian Empress - the 95-metre super yacht owned by Vijay Mallya. That found a home for 375.000 Euro -‘even the booze is included,’ added Mallya with a wink. Finally the icing on the cake: a piano from Elton John on which he wrote Songs from the West Coast. Again Mallya could not resist: for 226.000 Euro he has a new addition for the Indian Empress - and as auctioneer Charlie Ross asserted, this piano will turn any owner into a natural player.

At the end of a splendid evening, Elton John’s partner David Furnish - present on behalf of the Foundation - happily walked away with a cheque for almost 950.000 Euro - though not before shaking hands with Vijay Mallya

She tried to prod Sean Combs into bidding more for something by saying, "come on, you spend more than that on crack..."

Don't read my posts. Being negative is my God given right as an American.

And besides, you asked. No need to solicit further commentary from me if it's just going to annoy you, right?
And hey, 3/4 a mil for a run of the mil 911 is obscenely overpriced. Feel free to consult your kelly blue book. :-p
