Slow typing in Outlook

I have an issue with Outlook which I use as my default email client....the net says slow typing there and on websites like now.... is due to IE 7 and the conflict of cached dangerous websites (porn) and using HTML.

Since I post on the Rennlist email, HTML is not allowed....I clear my cache of sites on a regular basis and use Rich Text when typing in Outlook....

Any other ideas?

My firm always tell users to keep their inbox under 5,000 emails.

Yep....my inbox, deleted and sent are under 500 messages. I could see if Outlook was overloaded it would slow down performance. But I have the same intermittent issue while typing a response here.

Probably something in the background dragging down your available resource pool. That's a prime symptom of a virus, or spyware, have any unknown tasks consuming a large amount of resources?

Trend antivirus and Windows defender....recent sweep and recent downloads of newest updates....nada. I did have some issues with Skype for awhile but I dumped it and reloaded it....

Mike,

Bring up the task manager - Ctrl-Alt-Del and watch the system resources while Outlook is open and things are slowing down. Look to see what may be using a lot of memory or CPU - under the "processes" tab. When the process list is open, click on "Image Name", to sort the processes alphabetically. How much RAM do you have?

65,164K total Mem usage, between 14-22% CPU usage, 809 MB of PF Usage

PcScnScrv is my biggest drain at 65K, followed by tmproxy at 58K, iexplorer at 54K sqlservr at 53K, and then explorer at 33K

How many processes total are running? The CPU usage seems a bit high. I don't use Outlook, but I opened it and have firefox open and I only hit 8% CPU and that was only for a split sec. I sit at 0-4%. If your numbers are constantly running in the teens and twenties, you have something going on.

Get Hijackthis - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html and run a scan only, save the info and post it.

The one using the most of my CPU.....found this on a web search.....funny though my other computers with the same anti virus don't have the slow down. Just my every day laptop....

Trend Micro Internet Security Suite 2007 (which many refer to as PC-cillin 2007) appears to be causing performance problems for many. This is particularly perplexing as previous versions of Trend Micro PC-cillin, notably the 2006 and 2005 versions, were applauded for their streamlined performance. The culprit in the 2007 version appears to lie in 'PcScnSrv.exe', a component of the suite that many claim is consuming 97% to 100% of cpu utilization and anywhere from 50-70 Mb of RAM. The result: programs are hanging, websites timeout, and the system runs so slowly it's difficult to even shutdown.
The solution: uninstall the 2007 version, reboot the system and then reinstall the 2006 version using the license key from the *2007* version. This will get you another year of updates and buy some time until Trend Micro resolves the performance issues. Rumor has it, a patch is in the works for sometime in January.

Read here, it seems to be a conflict between PC Chillin and SpyBot. Get rid of one or the other....

I don't have Spybot....just Windows Defender (free from MicroLimp) and Trend PC-cillin anti virus (free from the office).......

still - I would get rid of the PC-cillin and check if it fixes it. Seems like a resource killer

Outlook 2003 and other of the pro versions of Outlook (with year version numbers) have a facility to compact the database it uses

a search or query on Woody's Windows Watch (google that) will find the exact procedure

As long as you do not feel two hands on your shoulders at the same time, then all is well!

Have used AVG for years and it works ok. The free version is ok but does the minimal that you need. Getting rid of Norton and the other memory hogs was the best thing I did for my computer in years.

I am using Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.1. and it works fine. As long as you use a wifi router for internet access you already have a pretty effective firewall and do not need any additional stuff that only slows you down. I have removed Spybot's resident portion (teatimer) and only run it every once in a while to wipe adware. All the other registry monitoring stuff is an annoyance in my books.....

With this config even hitting sites like Astalavista hasn't gotten me in trouble in several years.....

BTW: Skype is known to sometimes maxing out the processor load. Especially in combination with streaming video - ihis takes up a lot of processor time. And there have been bugy 3.x versions of Skype around.....
