Hooray! Free CarFax for everyone!

Edited - link removed -- though you can't get to it anymore anyway... -Z-man.

No.

It's only available for cars built in 1981 and later.

I can't believe this is being allowed. This is STEALING, plain and simple.

No - giving out carfax reports to other people is NOT allowed here. The original thread is gone, PM sent to user.

It is stealing, it is illegal, and it is not allowed here.

Good day all!

If a private company can access state databases, why can't individuals?
The databases are public record, and maintained with tax dollars.

I'm a defender of recent intellectual property when it's competively accessable to the public for fair market value, but I call bunk to that.

Then FOIA it.

CarFax is selling a service (taking the time to access, retrieve and organize the data). That's what you're paying for. Don't like it? Fine, go get the information yourself. Don't steal someone else's work.

How about people starting threads asking for free carfaxes??? I wouldnt think this should be allowed here either but I see it all the time, matter of fact I just seen a couple of them this last week on the 944 tech forum...I havent seen anyone complain or post "This is stealing on those threads". I agree, it isnt right to run carfaxes for people other than yourself but also believe that people posting threads asking for this shouldnt be allowed...

The point is, I don't think the public usually can access that information-except through Carfax.

I recently paid and got a carfax on a used car I purchased. It didn't show anything that I didn't know. Did it more so that if there was something on it, I wouldn't look stupid, since everyone was telling me to do it. As far as posting it here and having others use it for free, I wouldn't worry about it. Most are just checking their car and seeing how accurate it is. They most likely would of never done it for a fee anyway. In a way, its free advertising for carfax. Don't you think in this day and age, if someone puts up a coupon for Paypal, or a discount on some other Internet commerce, others are going to find out about it instantly?

So, 89911 - you won't mind if I stop by your house and 'borrow' your 911 for a couple of track days, would ya? After all, I would never rent or buy your car for a fee anyway, but I would like to check our your car and see how accurate your description of it is. In a way, it is free advertising for your car.

Just make sure the gas tank is full and the oil's topped off before I take it -- I shouldn't have to pay for that - after all, it isn't my car...

Using someone else's carfax isn't a big deal for you, but for the folks at carfax who make their living selling their services, it is a big deal.

-Z-man.

PS: Food for thought...

Face it, if they really wanted to crack down on others using it, don't you think they would find a way to make if more difficult then letting anyone use it as many times as possible? Are the relying on the Good people at Pelican to safeguard their product? How about having the carfax sent to individual emails to verify? Like I said, I paid for mine because I needed it that night. I wasn't going to hang out on Pelican for months and hope someone post a free car check. And yes, If I left a sign on my car that said unlimited rides and left the keys in it, I would expect someone to take a drive. If Carfax was really concerned, they would make it more difficult is all I'm saying.
